I think I'm okay with it now. That is...working in the tax accounting department of a company that sells clothing that targets the 20-30 age group. If it means the opportunity to relocate to an area that I believe I would enjoy living in, then perhaps I should just go for it. Right?
Tomorrow I have an interview with a company that sounds like a great place to work and would be good development for my career, except for one thing: I would not be interested in buying their products. They sell clothing that I would never care to purchase for myself, because it's not my style.
I have also seen job opportunities with companies that sell things such as baby products, but chose not to apply to those jobs, because I am 31 years old and would never care to purchase baby products.
What about in your opinion? Would you work at a corporation (headquarters) that is in the business of selling products that you would never purchase for yourself?
If your reasoning for not purchasing their product is personal preference, then that should not affect your decision to work there.
OTOH, if your decision not to purchase their product is based upon your morals, then you shouldn't work there.
Well, the only reason I'm asking is because I have been phone interviewing with a company that targets the 20-30 age group for clothing, but I'm 31 years old now. The company is located in Columbus, OH, which is a place that I am very interested in relocating to, but I was just wondering if this should be a deal breaker.
The only company I can think of that fits that criteria is Abercrombie and Fitch.
While their branding strategy has raised a few eyebrows, unless it's something horridly objectionable to you, I say go for the job. There's plenty of crap to do in Columbus if you're in your early 30's. Go for it.
Do you think a company that sells children's clothing hires a staff full of kids? Or everyone working at a medical supply company uses crutches or a wheelchair?
Lol! Love it!
Now for me, the only thing that would stop me would be working for a company selling things that bother my conscience-things I feel are unethical, don't work as advertised, shoddy workmanship, etc. For a short time years ago, I sold mobile homes. One day a major problem came up with a home I'd sold. My manager made a comment about it, "Mobile homes are built to sell, not to live in." I left soon after.

Yes you should.
Piling on a bit, your logic is flawed. If you must be a consumer of a company's products to be employed there, nobody would ever be a K12 teacher. After all, they have their elementary education.
Work for a company that you believe in, but don't feel obligated to purchase their products. Work for a company that aligns with your values. In my case this means that I don't work for defense contractors or religious organizations.
Yeah I suppose you guys are right. I mean, I'm actually wearing clothing by this company as we speak, at 31 years old, even though they say they target the 20-30 age group.
Unless it is guns, bombs, tobacco where maybe I could see you not wanting to be involved in selling those products why do you care?
The only time I ever used a product of a company I worked for is when I was at a bank I got a mortgage from then and had checking and savings with them.
And way back my first real job was with American Express and I got a FREE GOLD Card as an employee and I tell you at 22 years old I flashed my Gold Card everywhere and loved telling folks I worked for American Express. I booked a vacation with their travel group, I even got discounts on the merchandise catalog and bought a watch. Even got Amex Travelers checks and gift cards with no fee and gave them as gifts at communions/birthdays etc.
But remember that was a first real job excitement.I had friends working at Philip Morris selling cigarettes, Pepsi selling junk food and on Wall Street selling junk bonds or cold calling who were not that excited about their products.
This has to be a troll.. I mean, heck, I often wear clothing from Forever21 and I haven't been 21 in, well, Forever. Other than something like, say, cigarettes (you know, things that kill people)--especially in a non-sales role, I can and would happily do my job without a second thought.

I'd have no problem working for a company who's products I don't use (I do this currently).
You're talking about A&F.
One thing to keep in mind is the culture there - many people do wear the clothes, etc. so just consider that. I've heard of people wearing skirts and many other "less than professional" clothing to the office. As long as you won't feel too isolated by wearing what you like (I don't know, never been in that office) go for it.
Also, Columbus is a great city - you should be excited! PM me if you have any Q's about the city. Lived there 5 years.
Sure, I could do it unless it was unethical or immoral (to me) --- like porn.
