I think nonsmokers should be entitled to an extra three weeks of vacation every year.

It's no wonder that many companies are only hiring nonsmokers.

My insurance rates have gone down since our company began hiring only nonsmokers.

Our pre-employment process includes nicotine screening, through a blood test. Prospective employees must be nicotine free for one year before eligible for hire.

Expect this to be 50 pages. But I agree. They often say "but I can't help it, I'm addicted". Well too bad. I really wish smoking wasn't allowed at my company. People literally count off the 30' they must be from the entrance. My work actually gives cash to those who prove they are trying to quit. How about some cash for those who never started?

Ours is a health care company, and when smokers worked here we received complaints from patients who had to walk past smokers in the parking lot.

When the automatic doors would open smoke would get pulled inside the building.

We also don't miss seeing cigarette butts littering our parking lot and sidewalk.

Smolers ruin it for all of us. I don't like them.

I agree, if smokers get these 5 or 10 minute breaks to smoke, what's wrong with giving non smokers something? Fair is fair....

And it isn't just the time they spend in the actual act of smoking. It is the wasted time putting down their work, putting on coat or outerwear, walking to the designated area, walking back to their cubicle or office, picking up their work again.

Not to mention, me wasting time having to run to the restroom to puke every now and then when I get whiff of someone who put down a pack of cigarettes while on a break.

Not everyone abuses smoke breaks. I've worked with many people who just used their two 15 minute breaks.
But then again, I've also seen the opposite end of the spectrum.

One woman would take a 15-20 minute smoke break EVERY HOUR. She got away with this for years because management apparently didn't want to address it with her directly (for some unknown reason). So instead they are changing ALL of their campuses to disallow smoking or vaping. I can't help wondering what she will do then... walk down the street maybe?

If I worked with people like that, I'd start taking Twinkies outside as often as them and call it my Twinkie break. Sorry, can't help it, I'm addicted.

This, like many other things, all comes down to management doing their job and addressing the policy and not the weak management system that Melodica describes.

We had exactly this policy at my prior job. Smokers were allowed three 5-minute smoking breaks (in addition to regular break periods) over the course of their day. Non-smokers got an additional 15-minute break period. I would institute this policy where I am now if we had more then one smoker on staff. (who properly manages her smoke breaks to not be an inconvenience).

There were never complaints from either side.
