I actually think that a gift card to a grocery store is a great idea, especially if you know that co-worker XYZ is struggling financially.

I know that everyone on CD is rich (), but sometimes cash really is the greatest gift.

"I kinda sorta see your point about gift cards, and feel the same way. But sometimes getting a gift card from someone who doesn't know you very well or your likes and dislikes is much better than something really stupid, no? Also, you can re-gift gift cards..."

If you don't know each other well enough to choose something personal and meaningful, why are you even exchanging gifts at all? Just say NO to empty gestures! And don't even get me started on regifting.

Because not everyone has the privilege of having a family, extended family, loved ones during the holidays. Sometimes things as lame and stupid sounding as a secret santa, white elephant, etc, to those who are privilege to have holidays doesn't ring true for the rest of us who have to suffer for 2 months of non-stop advertising and marketing about how it's the season for family and friends and love and giving. Sorry, but there has been years where a secret santa gift literally removed my holiday funk. Dont participate if you don't like it then.

Actually, I DON'T have family, extended family, or loved ones during the holidays at the present time. But a obligatory gift that didn't mean anything to either the gifter or the giftee (such as an impersonal gift card) would not cheer me. Different strokes!

to get to know each other well enough to choose something personal and meaningful? clearly there are those who are pro-secret santa and those who are anti-secret santa. I prefer the pro people to be honest. the antis come across as terrible people.

One year at work a co worker got a bag of puppy treats. Most would be offended. Not him. He said, his little paw companion was his Christmas joy. Guess it's how receptive you can be.
Some folks giving candy,cups/mugs/ really just want to be safe. Ppl get upset without being gracious that a person put forth some effort..

Now mugs are 'safe'? I am an avid tea drinker, and I love to collect mugs. I would be happy with this - especially if it is decorated with a cute message.
