True. You can upset a tyrant used to getting away with murder (including illegal behavior that can cost the company a looooot of money) by standing up for your rights.
I am one that has a difficult time finding a great company to work for. I have very low expectations after having two nightmare jobs. Early in my career I had great luck with all of my jobs. There may have been a thing or two that didn't jive, but overall a great workplace.
I had one job that I was bullied by my boss and coworkers HR wouldn't step in. It was an incredibly toxic environment that still gives me hives. I left that job for another horrible job. This one my boss set me up as the fall guy for her mistakes. She never trained me and never had 1:1's with me. Truly bizarre.
I found a job I have been at for six years. I was thrilled up until last year with this job. There were certain areas I didn't like, but overall one of the best jobs I have had. We have an entire new C-Suite that is beyond horrific. So now, looking for my next gig.
It's depressing to be in this situation. All I want is a steady job I can count on for the next twenty or so years. From many people in my circle, they are too. You hit a certain age and it seems impossible to have job security.
When your boss hates his job, and his boss hates his job what are the odds their subordinates will hate their jobs?
Not only is wealth polarizing but the culture and quality of work is polarizing also.
I am seeing way more 'haves' work with other 'haves' in an interesting, intelligent, challenging and humanizing atmosphere, whereas MOST have-nots do not.
Rewards, both monetary and social, to talent and brains are no longer linear but exponential, ever-widening the gap.
The truth is, if you don't like the work, company and co-workers no matter where you go or look, it's because you have a problem, or you don't know how to find what you are looking for, which is still your problem.
People who don't know what they want, don't plan, don't work towards it, don't ask for it, they end up with crappy jobs and then complain about everything and everyone. They come into the work force with unrealistic expectations, like they think working in an office is what they see on TV shows and movies, where the people don't actually do any work.
Well, that's like saying "I found my soulmate and I love them more than the world, and you're divorced and single. And that's your fault."
I always find it interesting when people post here about loving their jobs (or mates). Are they doing it to gloat, or do they actually want to help people who haven't found that. Perhaps they even convince themselves that they love their job, just so they can gloat about it.
In any case, another problem is, things/life change.
Like any person with a bachelors degree from a pretty good school, I thought in my 20s I could make a lot of $ in the corporate world with very little effort.
And I succinctly remember saying to myself at some point in my 30s "All I want is a job that pays decent and doesn't require me to work crazy hours so I can concentrate on what I want to do in life."
But when you get a little older, and you start to see the end, you think about what you're doing for this world.
So, people also grow to dislike their jobs/careers.
It shouldn't have to be that way, but so many of us have awful times at our jobs. Many times, you leave one bad place and the next place is worse. Bad managers and bad coworkers are everywhere. I've heard all sorts of stories from family members and have experienced many nasty people at work myself. Why can't the workplace be somewhere you like going rather than hell on Earth?
Glad I don't have that problem. Been on my job 4 years and I must say it's nice to get up for work and look forward to going. It's nice to work for an owner who is very chill and doesn't watch you with binoculars.
Just do your job and your golden.
It's nice to get massive OT to the tune of 100 hour workweeks when you are busy. It's easy to work 16 hour days because not only do you enjoy what you do... you look forward to going to work because it's a very chill and laid back environment. The absolute best job I've ever had. I make about $80k hourly.. OT puts me around $120k and it's SOOOOOOOOOOO much better than any other job I've ever had... with better pay too. Haven't taken a day off since July 15th and I probably wouldn't be saying that if I worked in some dump.
People have always had awful jobs. Maybe they just used to be more resigned to their fate. I think people have an unrealistic expectation of finding something you "love". Well, good luck with THAT. Statistics prove otherwise.
If people really loved their jobs like they say they do, why would anyone want to retire? Seems you'd want to keep doing what you love. Why do people quit their jobs when they win the lottery? If you loved it so much, you'd be a masochist to deprive yourself of all that love.

I also think 'awful' is pretty subjective. Personally I had some very rough years when I was in my 20s. The fact that I have a job working only 40-50 hours/week, it's steady, reliable, I don't have to worry about losing my home, don't have to worry about my personal safety, going to jail, living on the street, etc. means I really don't have a lot to complain about.
Purely my opinion, but I think a lot of people have lived such good lives that they don't realize how good they actually have things. Any job with a reliable paycheck that is in safe conditions isn't all that bad, all things considered. I've seen people who have office jobs working only 50 hours/week complain as if they are working in hell. You're working in an office all day, for only 50 hours/week for money that supports your family. It could be a LOT worse.
