New Caledonia is closer to New Zealand, than the Australian mainland. Australia is the closest country to NZ due to Norfolk Island ( which is closer to NZ than Australia), and Lord Howe Island.
At one time, Russia's border reached so far south that you only had to travel through a narrow strip of Afghanistan to get to Pakistan(the thumb part of Afghanistan).
That Afghanistan thumb now separates Tajikistan from Pakistan. It would not be an easy walk of a couple of hours across it's 12 miles width, but would require a well-outfitted mountaineering party.

I've walked 20 miles, so I'm sure I could do it. Question is, is it safe?

China was once home to four sub-species of tiger: the Bengal (in far SW Yunnan province), South China (once over much of China), the Indochinese (again, far southern Yunnan and Guangxi provinces) and the Siberian Tiger (in Heiliongjiang province, e.g. former Manchuria near the Russian and N.Korean border).

Russia could be counted as the only European nation with a subspecies of tiger(except that all of Russia's tigers live in the Asian portion of the country).
Russia could also be counted as the only European nation with a subspecies of leopard(except that all of Russia's leopards live in the Asian portion of the country).

Yes, although tigers once lived in Turkey which is partly in Europe, and tigers were once found over much of Europe until recent times.
Until recently India was home to just about all the big cat species of the old world: tiger, lion, leopard, cheetah, snow leopard, clouded leopard.etc.
