So, I take it you have never been to California or have even seen many pictures of it, right?
The OP asked me to pick one of the two and I gave an opinion.
In comparison, Italy is still more diverse and stunning. And yes, in a nutshell, California is desert to the south, a bit mountainous to the centre and forest to the north. Not sure why you're being defensive.
From the Alps and the Camanian Volcanic Arc to jewels like the sub-alpine lakes, the Venetian Lagoon, the Mediterranean islands and so on. Italia takes it, in my opinion.

I am the OP. Your post was incredibly ignorant, that's why I acted in the way I did.
As you can see from the above maps, California has 4 well distributed biomes and Italy has 3 and the Mediterranean biome is overrepresented. California has much more true wild area as well. California has +4000m peaks in three different ranges all over the state from north to south. All of Italy's +4000m peaks are in a tiny corner (Aosta Valley) and they most lie on the border of Switzerland and France. California has some of the most diverse forests on earth. The biggest, tallest and oldest trees in the world are all in California. California's desert only lies in the South East corner of the state, it is also the hottest desert in the world.
California is clearly more diverse and that's why this question isn't about natural diversity it is about natural beauty.

And yes they are mostly on the border to Switzerland and France, but what does it matter.
These peaks are also generally steeper, more rugged and more glaciated than the 4000er peaks of California.
