And can we please stop it with the Hitler analogies? Even the liberal press is being embarrassed by people who draw these outlandish and ignorant parallels.

People in the 1930s could clearly see what was coming with Hitler whose literature (written while in prison) spelled out his intentions for the state, his underlying attitude to the Jews, to Eastern Europe, long before the Nazis came to power. That is in no way analogous to a politician calling for a moratorium on migration until a proper system of vetting and screening is put into place while terrorist attacks are already taking place in the country.

We have far better educated and articulate candidates like Dr Carson or Marco Rubio who believe in my conservative views who would carry out the duties of President far better than Trump. I don't trust the Muslim world, and I believe we need to be careful about who we let in our nation with all the threats these days. However Trumps positions are starting to sound like he has some kind of fascist viewpoint. Its a slipperly slope from nativism and distrust to hatred and even genocide. We should never even look down that evil path. I am sure the Germans in 1932 could not see the evil their leaders would soon succumb to. Trump also just does not seem that intelligent, and his childish banter with Megan Kelly, and Rosie Odonell years ago did not look presidential at all. Nor does his racists comments about Mexicans, or half a dozen other things he has said. I admire people who speak their mind and don't fear offending overly sensitive people, but I expect the things they say to be accurate and based in an informed viewpoint. Trumps comments do not look intelligent or to be those of a leader, in fact they look very middle school to me.

I cannot imagine this rube being the face of my country to the world. Its horrifying to think of him meeting the queen for tea, or having a conference with Putin. His ignorance would give late night comedians material for years to come, and the world would laugh at the foolishness of Americans for choosing such a man as their leader. Trump being elected would be proof to me that the movie Idiocracy is more of a prophecy than entertainment. I sure hope that one of the more respectable Republican leaders will begin to rise in the polls before this joke becomes something really not funny. No legitimate nation will respect the USA if Trump is our President. Obama has been harmful enough, electing trump would be like hopping out the frying pan and into the fire.
And I'm sure the Muslim world doesn't trust the Western world with countless invasions for superficial reasons...

Donald Trump should not be the next President, and I certainly hope he isn't.

That said, the US has an issue I have noticed - They tend to vote on the 'Who would I want to have a beer with' issue more than any other issue, and have for the majority lifetime of most people on here. Consider the elections:

Last election: Obama beat Romney - Romney dug his state out of debt, introduced universal health care and refused to use his gubernatorial veto to prevent gay marriage from occurring. The US public didn't vote for him because he was ostensibly a poor-hating, gay-hating bigot despite his very public record seeming to paint him as a centrist technocrat rather than a Mr. Burns-esque maniac. Who would you rather sit down and have a beer with?

Election before: Obama beat McCain - A decorated war hero political veteran was beaten in an environment made hostile by an unwinnable war, the collapse of the Lehman brothers and the general failure of politics as usual. But who would you rather sit down and have a beer with?

Election before: Bush beat John Kerry - John Kerry was a war hero, the Iraq War was starting to hit the war weariness stage and his outspoken nature should have guaranteed him a victory. This election was his to lose, but the American Public decided they liked Bush better despite a pretty abysmal record. Who would you rather have a beer with if you didn't know how their presidency turned out?

Election before: Bush vs Gore - Gore was the incumbent vice-president. Bush was facing prosperity, incumbency and an election that even Bush admits he is surprised he won. Bush had the common-man touch that Gore just didn't, despite Gore being educated, erudite and being part of a presidency that oversaw prosperity. Who would you rather have a beer with if you didn't know how their presidency turned out?

Election before: Clinton vs Bob Dole - Bob Dole had a clear plan for development and didn't have an embarassing affair with Monica Lewinsky. If given the choice between Bob Dole and Bill Clinton, who would you rather have a beer with?

Election before: Clinton vs George Bush, Snr - George Bush, Snr had incumbency. He had vast experience in the intelligence community, as vice president under Reagan, was one of the most brilliant men in American Politics and had a power few could match. But who would you rather have a beer with?

I'm just desperately hoping the majority of people wouldn't want to have a beer with Trump.

From a Canadian perspective Trump makes for great entertainment.
As a President? does it really matter as all his wild ideas will be filibustered and ultimately voted no by a congress bent on obstruction of his policies.

You are right about that. The 1400 year tortured history between the Western World and the Islamic World is one of invasion, counter invasion, war and hatred. As far back as the early middle ages Muslim armies were in Spain, even incursions into France. Christian armies spent 200 years in the Holy Land. Many Muslims still cite the Crusades as a reason for their anti western stance. It has become a very old negative feedback loop. Each act of aggression triggers a counter act of aggression. In recent times the best example is the fact that the September 11 attacks triggered two massive invasions of two muslim nations. Those wars inspired more terrorism and more attacks leading to the events today in the middle east. It never ends. I don't see any way to end it, I certainly am not willing to tolerate attacks and most people feel the way I do. This is why at this moment French jets are bombing Syria. The nation at the center of the latest attacks refuses to tolerate it as well. How does it stop?? I don't know. At this point we may be on the brink of a total war between the western world and the muslim world if these attacks continue. Another 9-11 scale attack would likely trigger such an event. IMO this would end very badly for the muslim world but that is the topic for another thread.

I do agree with you that the distrust is on both sides, and it now borders on outright hatred in many places. The support Donald Trump is getting because of his statements about banning Muslims is proof of how fed up Americans are with them. I think the poster who said the comparisons to Nazis was over the top is not looking at the possibility of a slippery slope here. Is Donald Trump Hitler?? We all know he is not. However the Germans at some point crossed over from holding a bias against Jews to hating them and blaming them for all the ills of society. From that point it became possible for a tyrant to persecute them and bring about a genocide. There is a reason we study history, we need to recognize the red flags before we get any where near the kind of thing that happened in the 1930s and 1940s. I hate to use this tired old saying, but those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it.

When I see who the candidates are, how they behave. I have to say they turn me off. The hateful and disrespectful comments I find very disturbing. The child like behavior is nauseating. I really would not want to know any of these people, let alone have them for president. I do believe what we see from US politics is a serious warning sign, on how much this country has faltered.

The US media I think blocks certain candidates, from getting anywhere in their campaigns. They destroy them right before your eyes. It's all crooked and a very phony process. Trump will never be allowed to have the Republican nomination Even if he has the votes, he will be blocked by the Republicans and the media. The Republicans do not want Trump representing their party.

I think most people in other countries that follow US politics, must think the whole process if very disturbing.

Do Americans here actually want to know what people elsewhere think of Trump, or would they prefer simply to continue relentlessly spewing their own opinions about him?

The thing that nobody seems to realise is that neither of the main narratives about America's future are true. America is not in decline - it has one of the best knowledge economies in the world, and is growing at a comfortable rate. And America is also not going to go back to being the undisputed 'greatest nation on earth'. It is going to be one great nation among many. Trump won't return America to some vaunted position of supremacy - but he will make it look stupid.

Here's what London Underground staff think:
