I'm glad they cancelled school today. The roads are just too slick, I think they made the right choice. Even the pass to Jackson was closed early this morning so my husband got to stay home. The pass is open now, but I'm hoping that his boss will let him stay home. It's ugly on the roads, no one should have to drive today unless it's absolutely necessary. Stay safe friends in Wyoming.

Friday (in Lander) they cancelled bus service due to the cold but not school. also they sent the kids outside for recess. I think it was -20. My friend in Albuquerque said they cancelled school there due to 1/2 inch of snow.

I'm quickly learning every state is different when it comes to what it takes to close school for the day. I have friends in both Washington and Colorado who will have a snow day when barely an inch or two falls on the ground. Last week we had 13 inches of snow over two days and the kids had school, and also negative temperatures during the day and they not only went to school, but had recess outside too. Back in California we would get Tule fog so dense the kids would start school 2 hours or 4 hours until the fog let up some so you could see while driving. I guess it just depends on where you're at and who's in charge there.

That was par for the course in the 70's and 80's. I lived on Spriggs just off 9th so I was walking to South (before West was built), then West, Jr High and the old HS which is now a hotel and some other stuff? Anyway, the ONLY time I remember school's closing was on a day where sustained winds in the 60's and gusts near 90 was occurring. They held us in the gym till parents picked us up (or the bus). But bus routes were often canceled due to road conditions, most kids still came in with their parents. The cut-off for cold was -40 at 7am, we got close a few times but never hit it. I walked to school in that weather without hesitation.

Schools were almost closed another time when the town flooded (early spring chinook that melted a LOT of snowpack), but that was over spring break if I remember correctly.

Down here in GA, they just have to talk about snow on the TV and the entire state goes into panic mode. Not that it matters, the schools are testing out as the worst in the country and rife with corruption anyway.

Pretty unusual for us to have snow days, for sure. But those of us in northern states do seem better prepared, whether our snow removal or our skills and clothing.

I recall working a contract job at a hospital in a southeastern state. When they got 4 inches of snow everything shut down. I got to work, of course, and when the administrator found out they paid me my wages to ferry others to and from work. I figured I was the highest paid taxi driver in the state those two or three days. But I sure saw some locals struggle with that bit of snow.
