The signature seafood cakes and flatbread are both amazingly delicious, and the wine list, featuring mostly West Coast wines, just right. Hudson’s serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.

Description: Roots is a delicious spot for all the folks who are too tired to crawl back over the bridge for dinner, as well as those who never left. Why should Portland have all the fun? The menu is a beautiful concoction of whatever is fresh and seasonal—for example, Dungeness crab and line-caught salmon or wonderfully roasted chicken breast. The wine list is thoughtful, and the service friendly. For those of you in Portland, Roots is worth a trip across the river. Roots is open for lunch and dinner daily.

This is the home of Cascade Brewing, a fine local outfit. In addition to its excellent beer, you’ll find a great pub fare, including a variety of hand-cut french fries and dipping sauces, including Yukon gold, shoestring, tater tots, sweet potatoes, and ale-batter steak fries, all of which arrive in a big bucket with dipping sauce.

85. Mactarnahan’S Taproom

City: Portland, OR
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (503) 228-5269
Address: 2730 Northwest 31st Ave.

Description: This huge brewery in the Guild’s Lake Industrial District at the edge of Northwest Portland shows off its 140-barrel copper brewing vessels by making them a part of its brewpub’s interior design. The kettles are from the Sixenbrau Brewery, dating back to the 16th century in Bavaria. Added to this Teutonic touch are fancy steins and a menu of seafood, schnitzel, sausage, and other grilled meats cooked on an applewood rotisserie and grill. A covered patio is open for dining during the winter. As for the brew, the line includes its gold-medal winning Amber Ale—the first amber ale in Oregon—as well as a well-edited collection of porters, Belgian-style ales, and seasonal brews.

86. Mcmenamins Tavern & Pool

City: Portland, OR
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (503) 227-0929
Address: 1716 Northwest 23rd Ave.

Description: This original tavern in the chain is the only one named after the McMenamin brothers, whose empire now stretches beyond Oregon. It’s a modest little spot a bit north of the cultural hubbub on 21st and 23rd Avenues. For a sense of history and a quiet brew, check it out. Try the Crystal Ale, an amber ale, or for a lighter taste, the Cascade Head Ale. Don’t be surprised, however, at the leisurely service.

87. New Old Lompoc

City: Portland, OR
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (503) 225-1855
Address: 1616 Northwest 23rd Ave.

Description: The place that started the Lompoc brewing empire, this pub is named after a bar in a movie with W. C. Fields and Mae West, The Bank Dick. Here you will find powerful beers brewed with great attention to balance. There are many seasonal brews, but the year-round varieties are also excellent. We recommend the rich Sockeye Cream Stout and the Proletariat Red, both strong beers that warrant total attention. But if you must be distracted by food, the menu has satisfying pub fare. Try them all on a sunny Saturday afternoon on the deck.

88. Rogue Ales Public House

City: Portland, OR
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (503) 222-5910
Address: 1339 Northwest Flanders St.

Description: This is Rogue’s Portland outpost (they are based on the coast, in Newport), and it has taken advantage of its good Pearl District location to offer conference rooms and catering, as well as a Lego table (for those really tough meetings). This pub also offers the hard stuff, as well as its excellent beer. The beers served here include Rogue Red, Brutal Bitter, Buckwheat Ale, Porter, Stout, Rogue Smoke, and Maierbock; some of these are in pressurized kegs. They also usually offer a cask-conditioned beer.

89. The Bagdad Theater And Pub

City: Portland, OR
Category: Restaurants
Telephone: (503) 236-9234
Address: 3702 Southeast Hawthorne Blvd.

Description: This is a Southeast Portland landmark and a great place to uncoil. You can watch a first-rate movie for a couple of bucks or sit out on the picnic tables and survey the scene on bustling Hawthorne Boulevard. One of the McMenamins’ five movie-house brewpubs, the Bagdad is a Hawthorne-area favorite. The movies are usually second-run features, and the lighting and sound quality are very good. The Bagdad carries the McMenamins brews that you’d expect: the fruity Ruby Ale; Hammerhead, a malty, hoppy, English-style ale; the dark and stout Terminator; a light and refreshing wheat ale; and a rich, smooth, porter. Food choices in the pub next to the theater include nearly a dozen pizza options and everything from hot Thai noodles to black bean burritos.
