Are people really flocking to Alaska to try to get rich? If they are, I haven't heard of it. I surmise that, as crude oil and gasoline prices ratchet up, Alaska will see fewer and fewer people period. It's too darn expensive for most people from down here to even go there, let alone afford to invest in a mining operation.

Planning and going to Alaska to see the wonders "she" has to offer (Mountains, streams, forests, animals, fishing) Planning on spending some money and not panning for gold. Or other get rich quick scheme that won't work.

BUT if fuel hits $5/gal it may not happen...

She used that panning thing on the beach and then she went on a rig out in the water where they suck sand off the bottom and separate out the gold. it was an interesting show but it seems that people will think that artic panning is another way to get something out of alaska like the people who are on gold rush. or trying to be a logger or a fisherman because they think its so easy to make money

Gold mining is an integral part of Alaska's history. It provides many jobs and hours of recreational opportunities. I enjoy going up to Chicken, Central and Fairbanks to try my hand at prospecting. With a little bit of research it's not some kind of "get rich scheme"....

yeah alaska and a good portion of the western lower 48 was settled and built on prospecting but i am hoping to move to ak at some point in the future and i really want the alaska so many of the alaskans love now not some crazy "off the grid" money making state where people just appear to ruin the local environment trying to make some easy money. those gold rush guys upset even me with some of their antics

Artic ocean full of gold...who knew?

NO, NO, NO, again Palin mis-read the information, the Arctic Ocean is full of COLD, a whole lot of COLD, even when it is actual liquid water as opposed to the solid state it sometimes becomes,it is still really cold, survival times are figured in small increments, as the brain freezes all sorts of things slow down, I suspect Palin fell overboard a time or two and her brain is still not working correctly. Of course there is an alternate theory that questions if her brain ever worked correctly.

I have played with a gold pan in Alaska over the years. Almost always find a few specks of gold and so far I just wash it back into the creek...It's a renewable resource your know.

Seriously I do play with it but am not a pro at all. Once I was on the beach at Ninilchik and had my pan so I tried a little creek about 1 foot wide that ran off the bluff and through the sand. It was some of the best panning I ever did. Maybe 7-10 specks per pan. Still not enough to keep but kind of surprising.

I intend to take my little aluminum boat up to the Arctic this summer. Using a halibut rod with a bucket tied on the end of the line, I should have several hundred pounds of gold at the end of each day. A friend will stand by on the beach with a wheelbarrow, so I can empty each bucket of it's gold. And all I have to do is slowly troll back and forth along the beach, watching that bucket fill with pure GOLD! I'm gonna be RICH RICH RICH! Thanks Sarah!
