The post office neither cares nor checks though...

If you're trying to establish residency but not officially moving until next March? (I believe it starts from January 1st for PFD purposes so by coming back in March you wouldn't qualify for the PFD until 2018, so I would just stay from May 2016 on) I would

A) get a driver license
B) register to vote
C) register my vehicles here
D) get a local telephone number
E) file next years taxes here
F) keep a copy of my first lease or utility bills
F) a big thing they check for on the PFD is if you cut ties with your other state. You should cut all ties with your other state.
G) if you're actually living here it's not hard to establish residency. Mainly just by doing the same stuff you would normally do while cutting all ties with your previous state is good enough.
March 31st is the deadline. They still have time for 2016 PFD.

(2018 what?)

Which, the OP would not qualify for anyways, b/c of the time spent out of the state.
You qualify for it immediately now. They did away with the residency requirements years ago.

But yeah, you need to prove residency for that. But OP never asked that, so... Just asked "how to be a resident?" There is nothing special to claim that. Anyone can claim that. I am from New York, but have not been back in 20 years. I still say I am a "New Yorker".

You are very rude. There is no such "residency" designation anywhere in the USA. Residency could be anything. Bank account, mailing address, piece of mail, or just claiming you are a resident. I have lived all over the US and never once changed my status from "non-resident" to "resident". If there is a process for that, please tell me. I fear I have spent most of my life without residing anywhere!

No, Helga, the OP does not qualify for the check immediately. Stop lying.

Seriously, crap like this is part of the reason I wish they'd do away with the check altogether. They probably will, since the state is close to broke, so those of you considering it as one of the "perks" of living in Alaska should realize the chances of it going away or being drastically reduced are pretty substantial.

I wish there was a requirement to have an IQ of at least 100 to move to Alaska.
