Scary! This is not the first summer Alaska has had record temps. The first five months of this year has been the hottest on record, globally. It makes me wonder what impact this will have on out ecosystem, especially in places like Alaska where the differences are quite remarkable.

Well this year there is a bumper crop of hornets and yellow jackets, all the stores in Anchorage are out of Hornet & Yellow Jacket spray! Also the spruce bark beetles are still at it. Lots of trees on the big Su are dead or dying this spring. They are starting up the Yetna next.

We're pretty deep into the 6th extinction, though most in this forum won't admit it or acknowledge that climate change is anything other than "god's will." ^^^

There's a story on the SE heat in today's Juneau Empire news. Here's an excerpt, pertaining to the state in general.

"Monday was the 150th consecutive day of above-normal temperatures in Alaska using a 25-city composite index. This year remains on track to be the hottest ever recorded in Alaska, on pace to beat last year’s hottest year on record"

It's pretty cold in the interior of Alaska right now:
https://weather.com/news/news/alaska...ecord-warm-may

And just a couple of weeks ago it was snowing Atigun Pass on the Dalton. If this cool weather and rain continues through August, there is a pretty good chance that the snow will fall In September. Also, because of all the rain the Chena and other rivers in the interior are almost reaching flood stage.

This is the forecast for Fairbanks this week, from the National Weather Service in Fairbanks. Right now the temperature is 60 degrees, and I am missing the usual 80s:

Quote:
Tonight
Scattered showers, mainly after 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. West wind around 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Wednesday
Scattered showers. Cloudy, with a high near 64. Southwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Wednesday Night
Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 49. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday
Scattered showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 64. South wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Thursday Night
Showers. Low around 50. Southwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday
Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 63. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Friday Night

My first week in Alaska (Fairbanks area). And its been mostly
in the high 50s. Pretty comfy minus the rain. I understand this is cooler than is typical during this time of year?

It's finally cooler here on the Kenai. Clouds are rolling in, temps feel mid 50s, and we are scheduled for at least a week of much needed rain.
