This kid reminds me of the ones that did the school shootings, then there are serial killers, Timothy McVeigh, the people that go postal at work...anything can happen anywhere and I would bet we have lost more people on the ground in the US due to these types, versus the 'typically perceived' profile of a terrorist. What also comes to mind is the wacko that went off shooting at the Soldotna Hospital a little over a year ago...it just proves profiling is not going to work effectively to keep everyone else safe.
Mental illness has many forms.

The most recent kid was lost. His facebook talked about his isolation loss of meaning. In that environment persuasive people who promote belief systems which cannot be proved or disproved feed off them. They program them with additional "facts" and create a false reality. The next step is subjugation of free thought and elimination of external relationships. That is how cults function from religion to terrorism. Their methods are typically to discredit the logical paradigms which is the basis of western thought.

If you want to find a murderer who is known to be Irish you go to the Irish hood. If you are looking for a car thief who is black, you look for a black man. If you are looking for a terrorist, you look for a member of that cult. Both McVeigh and this latest freak had been radicalized by cults. That is not profiling. Its good police work.

You see, we are up against the paradox of free societies. There is always the possibility that someone will abuse those very freedoms provided by our open societies and use them against us. Clearly, the Islamists are exploiting this 'loophole' (for want of a better word). But the prescription of aggressive profiling, while tempting as an instinctive reflex, leads us down a slippery slope. This is a complex issue and it remains to be seen how elastic the limits of our collective tolerance are before we determine that we have to amend our laws accordingly. It will mean curtailing some amount of freedom - but that is the trade-off that will have to be made if ever it is made.

You have to see this Putin response to believe it. The stunned silence following it is telling.

It is going to be interesting to see who Obama fires or reprimands. Until then if flying from overseas and someone covers up their crotch with a blanket and is making movements just ask, "hey there pal, whatcha doin"?
