Yes while there might be Filipinos who do not want to be associated with them, there are also many Filipino women in the US especially in California who are married to Mexican men and their offsprings are called " Mexipinos ". Examples are Vanessa Hudgens and American Idol star Jessica Sanchez.
My sister is also married to a Mexican.
I noticed Mr Bolo is in San Francisco and despite that cities highly touted image of tolerance, often has rather strained race relations.
Mexico Ceviche (I heard there is also Ceviche or Kinilaw in other Latin American countries)
^Ceviche of Peru
Philippines Kinilaw or Kilawin
the ceviche reminds me of a store we have in California called Seafood City. I could not tell if it were mexican or Filipino owned for the longest time. I used to get several varieties of ceviche from there. I am told that it's Filipino owned but I have also heard that the family may be of both backgrounds.
What is interesting is that, among the other Asian countries colonised by Europeans, the Philippines is the most notable one... You can see it it religion, language, arts and literature, food and culture as well as surnames. In Wikipedia, everytime they talk about famous foods or cultural festivity in Latin America and Spain, Philippines is also always included.
The similarities shared by both is abundantly obvious even to someone like me who belongs to neither group. In fact both of these countries seem more similar to one another than either does to its immediate neighbors.
There are lots of similarities and interconnections it's amazing. Chavacano even has influences from languages spoken in Mexico.
There are connections between the Phillipines, Cuba, and the vast former Louisiana Territory regions as well. Louisiana has a long history of incursions of Fillipinos in Louisiana going back to the colonial period. Louisiana was a French and Spanish colony. There was a Fillipino settlement.
Louisiana certain stands out doesn't it? It's part Southern US, Part Caribbean, part Latin American and does resemble some Filipine traits.
Where else, but in the Philippines? One of the biggest crooks the world has ever seen, Imelda Marcos, is exiled to Hawaii, returns to the Philippines, and at 82 is serving a 2nd term as a legislator!
Washington DC, USA. Mayor goes to jail, gets out, gets reelected.
The Philippines does seem to have more in common with southeast asian countries than they do with most Latin American countries though. It's an interesting blend.
You've not been around too many of either group have you? You would have to be completely blind not to see the similarities. the two groups don't just have "similarities". At times they are confusingly alike. not just what everyone has been able to show in this thread. what can't really be illustrated are the subtleties. Even down to the little nuances of communication, the body language among other things. Filipinos look like other Asians but the similarities really stop there. They may mix with Chinese but that's about it. Oddly enough, Chinese are also who Mexicans may mix with from time to time.

That's really harsh to say that Filipinos only features Asian as in look, you people are really Asians, just look at the street food etc that hardly features any Latin American culture. Philippines do have Spanish influence yes but the similarities of the Philippines with its neighboring Asian country goes even deeper to root. Chinese may have intebred with the Pinoy but also largely influence the culture there, just like how they influence other Southeast Asian nations.
The difference is that Philippines are a large ingedious groups at that time and doesn't really have a 1 whole representative culture as much as its neighbor since it is too widespreadout, making the Spanish and American easily influence the life there by uniting them under 1 banner and culture, also the Spanish priority to spread religion easily kills traditional life there. Whereareas in Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia, these county are large influential kingdoms with a state religion, making it harder for missionaries to kill local religion.

Nope... Chinese influence isn't that big. If it was, we would have been merchants like them and would have gotten their religion as well as their cultural festivities. We do not celebrate their cultural festivities except for Chinese New Year which is only celebrated by Chinese communities in few places. In my hometown, it was not even celebrated some years ago, I guess only 6 years ago.
Streetfood is all over Asia I guess so it doesn't really count since we get influenced by our Asian neighbours too but our culture was shaped when Spanish and Mexicans came, it started with pur religion, dance, food, arts and literature, cultural festivities and even our way of thinking. Did you see our cultural and religious festivities ? Are these celebrated in Asian countries too ? No ! But are celebrated in Latin America .
We recognise being Asians but we also recognise our hispanic side.

Louisiana is very Latin American. It's historic and cultural core base is Spanish and French. This also extends to all other areas of the vast Louisiana Territory region going back to colonial times. It consisted of a majority of land of what is now the USA.

Fillipinos have unique features that set them apart. I'm usually able to tell Asian groups apart. Mannerisms come into play in how you can distinguish which one is which, and skin tone and color etc.
