Atlanta's south downtown, long ignored, gets attention | Torpy

Torpy on the project. $90 million for 4 acres of parking and 47 out of approximately 60 buildings in the Alabama/Trinity/Prior/Spring quadrant.

Mostly small stuff, I think. Stuff that will probably be gentrified anyway, after all this other stuff around them.

This is not all of the Newport acquisition, but it gives a decent visual, and shows a few of the mostly smaller properties that were not acquired:

Anyway, I heard the number is actually 50 buildings... plus 4+ acres of parking lots which they intend to build new buildings on. This project is an even bigger deal for the future of the city than the Gulch project. And that one's huge.

For example, this 'CEI Hair Schools' little building was not acquired, but everything else in that strip of that block was:

Excellent read, so exciting.

I love the part about the rampant open air drug deals. What is this, two blocks from the courts that should be keeping this off our streets? Pathetic job governing there, CoA....pathetic

Blame the revolving door of Fulton Co Jail and Court system.

Fair enough, I should spread the blame around. They're right there too.

What kind of message does this send to criminals that crime is tolerated that the level it is? This sets a tone and breeds the type of $#!* people that go and rob a restaurant and kill the cooperating victim. Someone needs to clean house in our local justice system. Reform reform reform

I have one of the properties I bought to renovate before Newport really got into to the area. It didn't make sense to sell with all the planning & work I am putting in to it.

A neighbor on one side of me is not selling because he said they would have to buy him out of his business / give him enough to retire comfortably as he does not want to have to relocate and rebuild his customer base.

Newport seems to support the idea of having others mixed in to the area and not forcing those owners out who would not mind staying.

Makes sense, and sounds totally in line with Newport's organic approach to the neighborhood.

Well they can't just wipe everything out and expect it to come back to life. It has to be incremental, block by block.
