I have never had any chicken and dumplings in a restaurant that were as good as what mom made. (Not that I have tried it in all those places listed) Perhaps I just want that "style", and everyone does it in their own way. So I just make it myself. I do think of it as a winter dish, though, so never in the summer. I may have to change my thinking now that I am back in Texas and there is a short winter here, but I just associate a big bowl of chicken 'n dumplings with warming up on a frosty day.

I remember that place, it was excellent. As I recall they served it only on Sunday, so I was there on Sunday a lot. They sold out for that huge mall that was put in on the South side of the road.

Their website says its on Tuesdays.

I've only been to one Cracker Barrel in my life, had the chicken and dumplings and found them inedible, awful. Maybe that was an exception?

I found one other recommendation on another website for Cracker Barrel. I'm skeptical but willing to give them a try, its been years since I set foot in one.

I also found Cracker Barrel C&D to be not to my liking. Some of their food is OK, but not that. It was sort of a bowl of starch.

Well, if you ever find yourself in Smithfield, North Carolina, I can highly recommend the Cracker Barrel there(although we had breakfast, not C&D). They were exceptionally nice to our family reunion group of 22, including younger kiddos.

I had not been in one for a decade or more when I stopped on the way to Kiawah Island from Atlanta and hit three different 'Barrels' on the round trip! Had to make another trip to a CB to buy two rocking chairs that DW liked so much! 'Course I had to pick up some more orange soda while I was there .
