The "cool kids" either had BMW's if their parents were loaded, or Camaros/Mustangs if they were not as rich. The middle and lower-middle kids had a lot of Chevy Cavaliers, Toyota Corollas, etc.
My husband had an '85 Dodge Daytona, but he LOVED that thing, he treated it like a Ferrari...
3rd generation Camaros and Firebirds, as well as fox body Mustangs were popular.
1981-1987 GM RWD G body cars (Cutlass, Monte Carlo, Regal, Grand Prix) were popular.
1982-1994 Escorts, Cavaliers were also popular.
Some drove trucks. The 1982-1990 S-10 was popular, the Ford ranger semi popular.
A few drove classic American cars/muscle cars.
OK, that sounds somewhat similar to my experience, but being in California, we were heavier on the imports and a bit lighter on the GM's I think. My husband, who I dated in high school, came from Ohio where the GMs were more popular...he noticed that when he moved to CA our junior year (93/94).
In the early 50s, in my town, I doubt of more than one out of a hundred kids had their own car. They just drove dad's,when dad let them, which wasn't very often.
76-79 lots of late '60s Muscle cars: Challengers, Camaros, Chevelles for the Motor Heads, newer Trans Ams and Z28s for the uppity rich kids (6.6 Litre, an astounding 200HP) and for the rest of us old pickups, VWs, Vegas (Yikes!) Pintos (double Yikes!) rusty LTDs, Caprices and Datsuns - a few classic Mustangs, Cougars in the bunch and my parents had both a Porsche and Mercedes (we 3 boys shared a 1970 GMC pickup) so when they went out of our little town for a couple of days we certainly would take them out and race 'me around the best we could haha
I went to a high school in the late 1990s that had a lot of kids from well-off families. The kids seemed to fall into two camps: those whose parents gave them late-model luxury "hand-me-downs", and those who had to buy whatever they could afford on their own. The hand-me-down drivers generally drove 3-4 year old BMW 5-series (I recall the '97-'98 528i was quite popular), Mercedes E-Class, Audi A4 or A6, Lincoln Continental, Lexus ES300, lots of nice suv's like loaded Explorers, Grand Cherokees, Tahoes, etc. The "pay their own way" folks generally drove 10+ year old GM or Ford sedans, 5-10 year old Civics or Corollas, Cavaliers, rusty old Jeep Wranglers and Cherokees, etc.
The guy who was thought to have the coolest car by most people had a brand new Mercedes CLK430. Of course, he crashed it twice in the first year he had it. I can't imagine what his car insurance cost after all of that. Well, mom and dad probably paid it anyway.
The most "unusual" cars in the high school lot included some well kept 1960s Chevy sedan (Impala?), a 1980s Cadillac funeral hearse, and a Merkur (one of like 10 I've seen in my whole life).
for my high school years, 72-76, the popular cars were chevelles, road runners, torinos, pick ups, mustangs, camaros, and firebirds.
