I grew up in a middle class conservative area, and most cars were practical, Mostly passed down, mostly purchased by parents themselves, but also kids. There were a lot of Civics, Chevy Caveliers, Mitsubishi Eclipses, various Pontiacs, Acuras, Nissans, Dodge Intrepids...Civics, Corollas, Camrys, Toyotas, Accords, etc., Civics--new or old. A few kids had muscle cars Like the GT. A few drove the family minivans or station wagons (like me ). On most days I'd drive the Plymouth Grand Voyager, but occasionally, I'd use the Volvo which was fairly new (and made me feel extra special .

Did I mention there were a lot of Civics?

In my high school years early 70's, I remember many vwagons, mustangs, toyota corollas. I always wanted a Toyota celica but couldn't afford it. I ended up getting a Ford Pinto.....that was a mistake.

At my high school in the late 90s (96-00) most kids drove either stuff like the Honda CRX or a Toyota Corolla or the Mitsubishi Eclipse/Eagle Talon. Dodge Neons and Cavaliers/Escorts were also pretty popular. I drove an 89 GMC Safari van and had probably the biggest baddest car on the high school lot bwa ha ha ha ha.

Yeah baby! That's what I'm talkin' about! I used to drive an 89 GMC Safari at a job I had in the mid to late 1990s. And I currently drive a 2005 Chevy Astro, oh yeah! Astros and Safaris rule!

Went to a private high school in St. Louis, most kids were middle class but we had a few who had money...and a few who rode the bus to school too...I had one of the "cooler" cars albeit it was slow as hell, 85 firebird...there was another guy with an 87 firebird also. 81 (2nd gen) Z28 was in the lot, maybe an IROC or two. I don't remember anyone having a Foxbody at my school, but I had several friends who LOVED them, decent cars considering. There were a couple of Civic's, some with those damned red badges on them. One kid had a Mustang Cobra (Daddy had $$) another friend had a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 (Awesome car) and one friend drove a 99 or 2000 Corvette (He previously owned a different 3000GT VR4 (His dad was an architect I believe, and bought matching corvettes for his wife and son...awesome dad). The majority of cars in the lot were mid 90's econo-boxes, with the occasional Eclipse, Mustang, or F-body mixed in.

Graduated in '79. Monte Carlos, Cameros, Mustangs were the most coveted I would say. Most of us drove old family sedans back then.

Same here. Graduated in '79. About the same cars at my school... Monte Carlos, Camaros, Mustangs. Also Chevy Impalas/Caprice, Dodge Dart, Olds 88, Firebirds and a van sometimes.

I used to watch them driving around in the parking lot burning rubber!

Cars that were popular when I was in high school:

1. Ford and GM pickups from the late '70s through the early '90s, mainly late '70s and '80s models. Many of these got steel block or wood block body lift kits and 35" tires. If you had Super Swampers, you were somebody

2. GM A-body (FWD) and W-bodies. If you didn't drive a truck, you probably drove a Grand Am or some other 3.1 or 3.8 L GM FWD car.

3. Early and mid-90s Hondas, Toyotas, and Mitsubishi Eclipses/Eagle Talons. A few of these got the Fast and Furious treatment

4. A handful of SUVs such as old Blazers, Jimmies, Broncos, Jeeps of various stripes, and a few original Explorers.

There were a few fun cars, such as one guy having a ~1990 Mercedes 560SEL and a few Fox body Mustangs and GM F-bodies. The coolest car anybody had was a sweet 1970 Monte Carlo that the owner restored. What did I drive? I drove a '91 Chrysler minivan that my folks told me I could either drive or they'd haul off to the scrapyard. It was no fun to drive a mommymobile but it was better than nothing.
