I graduated in 2000 so none of the older cool clasic cars were popular as they were out of our price range but when I was in school for some reason the hot car to have was a 1990 Mustange the boxy ones with the slit tail lights.

Mid to late 1980s. Local economy tanked due to low gas prices (oil industry big here). Rarely did anyone at school have new cars. Popular we're late 70s to early 80s trucks, Camaro, & Mustang. One girl had the wedge shape Trimph TR7.

Graduated 2002: I grew up in Lake Tahoe so popular cars were: Subaru Legacy, Subaru Impreza, Subaru Loyale, Toyota 4runner, Lightly lifted 4WD Toyota Pickups.

Good Topic

For me I graduated in 1982.
One goofy kid had a Honda Civic and a second goof a Kami Edition Scirocco. Maybe another kid a mid 70s Celica.
Most kids drove GM medium size cars like Cutlass, Regal, Lemans.
Firebirds and Camaros were the hot cars most desired. A few rich kids had Z28 s and Trans Am s.
A couple of what to be Hill Billies drove trucks, very few.
A few family hand me downs, station wagon and 4 door X-family cars also.

This was Pinellas County Florida, Seminole High, mosty middle class area.

Me 1974 had a 1964 Dodge Polara with a push button trans, and big block 318. It was very fast. Burned regular leaded gas.

I went to high school in 1960s. A prep school actually. In any event, the popular cars seemed to be the Camaros, Mustangs, Firebirds, and other muscle cars. One of my friends had a Shelby Mustang GT fastback. That thing sounded nice. A few kids had foreign sports cars.

In the mid to late 90's when I was in high school the kind of cars I've commonly see in the student parking lot were Toyota Corolla's, Toyota Camry's, Toyota Tercel's, Toyota Pickup's, from the 1980's, Honda Accord's, Honda Civic's from the 1980's Ford Tempo's, Ford Taurus's, Ford Mustang's, Ford Ranger's, Ford F-Series from the 1980's and earlier, Chevy Citation's, Chevy Cavalier's, Chevy Camaro's, Chevy S-10 pickup's, Chevy Blazer's and Chevy Corsica's from the early 1990's and earlier.
