Cars that cheap in ca most likely wont pass the smog test in ca which is the toughest in the nation. Many people buy cheap cars & end up spending a bundle or junking the car cause the smog repairs are too high. In ca you must own the car for a min of 2 yrs before you can request financial assistance which isn't much (500.00). Repair shops charge a arm & leg. California law states the seller is suppose to smog the car but many don't & they sell the car "as is".

I just do not routinely see drivable cars that cheap anymore either. Anything that runs and has a remote chance of passing inspection is going to have a much higher asking price. Heck, I sold a car with a bad engine (spun bearing) for $500 a couple years ago.
