Rich, or at least reasonably wealthy, are the only ones buying Teslas, so there do seem to be a lot of them that are buying fuel efficient cars... And yes, wealthier people tend to have more than one car. Though, the fact is, more than 66% of American households have 2 or more cars, so maybe it's not just the rich that have more than one car...

The question is WHY are they buying them? Are they really buying them to save on fuel cost or are they buying them to say "Look at what I bought? Look at me."
I think it is manly the latter.

Both.

If you just want a hey look at me mobile, the Tesla isn't really great. They're all over the place here. They're actually the best selling luxury sedan in its price range (7-series, S-Class, A8, etc) in California. There's certainly amount of "hey look at me," but less so than any other luxo barge.

Fisker Karma actually.

That's really a vehicle bought exclusively on looks as it's not particularly good. It does look amazing though. But yeah, looks only go so far which is why it never really sold well. I'd kind of hoped they'd get picked up have a V8 put in which would cure most of its problems.

your hope has been turned into a reality.

Bob lutz (GM's savior) helped start a venture which stuffed LS7s into Fisker Karmas.

Well, yeah, there were other things that happend to Fisker: A123, the company they were buying batteries from, went under, and a large number of Karmas were damaged in port in hurricane Sandy. They originally missed their launch date a number of times, and then had internal political battles that caused mismanagement of the company, forcing them into bankruptcy.

Their production model, of intercontinental assembly, also caused problems.

They are under new ownership and are poised to come back:

Poor people buy transportation. Rich people buy status. Ford's workers bought Model T's. Ford's executives bought Duisenberg's. So what else is new.

agreed. I see lots of BMWs, Mercs, Audis, etc parked in the WalMart parking lot. I also see a lot of gas guzzling old SUVs in front of Starbucks.
