Maybe the OP's theory is correct and the guy was poor, since Rolls-Royce are notorious gas guzzlers.

Small world.. I grew up in East Stroudsburg.. 2002 High School Grad.. amazed that anyone who could afford a Rolls-Royce would even be shopping at that hell hole!!!!!!! LOL

Who do poor people drive gas guzzlers? For the same reason that poor people are more likely to do things like smoke cigarettes or play the lottery: a lot of poor people are poor because they are stupid.

- my wife's Sonata needs $70 to fill up, so $80 for a big SUV isn't correct, especially if it's for premium.
- Trader Joe's vs. Walmart is not how you tell rich people from poor people - you can't tell by the clothes they wear, the car they drive, or if they shop at Walmart.
- Hybrids are overpriced - why would poor people buy them?

I see plenty of hybrids like the Prius parked at Walmart, at least in my area. And I do see many lower class folks driving them, albeit older ones.

But an SUV will require $80 fillups more frequently than your Sonata would require $70 fillups

I was looking over at a woman in an Escalade and her 3 kids sitting inside arguing with no seat belts on. Forget how her kids are behaving, I was thinking about her $80+ fuel fill-ups. I can't even imagine spending over $100/month on gas for my Prius.
Okay, I'll bite...exactly who tells you the income of these people's households?

(FYI, my 5.7L Jeep takes $65ish to fill-up. Not bad, really. Also, for whatever reason, I find myself refilling it about the same as I did my 370Z, but a little more often than I did my little 4 cylinder Infiniti. Really though, I just don't care? I'm far from rich, but I do have a reasonable amount of disposable income.)

Got another spin on that.

Manual labor jobs typically pay less. They typically require hauling equipment. Hauling equipment typically requires a vehicle not known for economy.

That's another way of looking at it...

True story - the Sonata gets a mix of 26 on paper but real world is more like 18mpg. My SUV gets 16mpg. Plenty of crossovers do better too. Beginning to wonder how much Hyundai cheats on their mpg numbers.

How true!

It's okay for us to drive gas guzzling cars only when it benefits the hamstermobile crowd.
