This could be a fun look back. What are some products for cars that were once common that you hardly see anymore? Remember going to a car wash or autoparts store and seeing the hard plastic cup holder you mount on the door by sliding it in between the window and door panel? Cars back then didn't have built in cup holders so people who enjoyed drinking coffee, cola, or beer had to constantly hold onto their cup/can. This cup holder held the standard beer can/beer bottle, soda cans, or fast food drink cups.

This one I installed on my first car, leather wrap for steering wheel. For those who never saw this, it was a leather strap that you literally wrap around your steering wheel and use the included string to tie it down. If you were careful and took your time, it looked pretty good.

Though this is still sold today, I don't see it too often on cars today like in the past, seat covers. Back in the 1970s when vinyl seats were common, seat covers were practically a requirement. Vinyl seats will harden and crack over a short time with exposure to sun and cleaning chemicals. Back then, the shorts we wore (even men) would be considered today to be "short shorts". Trust me, those cracked vinyl seats really dig into your skin. The cloth seats back then felt better but didn't last any longer than the vinyl seats. I wonder if the polyester they used were of the same chemical make up as the vinyl?

Back in the day it was common for people to replace their factory original shifter knob with an aftermarket custom design. Some were fun looking or just plain cool.

I am looking for that orange ball I used to see attached to cars, bouncing
on some rod, so
you could see your car in a big parking lot of a sea of look-a-like cars!

Back in the day, tons of those pine tree air fresheners hung from peoples mirrors. Pretty rare to seen them now.

Not attached to the car but somewhat related is JC Whitney catalogs. Always got them in the mail and browsed through them.

One item I don't miss is truck tonneau covers with snaps. Dang things never worked in the winter.

Interestingly, just in the past year I have bought steering wheel cover, seat covers and a Club, not all for my own cars.

I always liked the page of gaudy hood ornaments. From the big chrome pelican with light-up blue plastic wings to the "Illuminated Jester", thumbing his nose at traffic.

I still get JC Whitney from time to time. I used to change the steering wheel on my cars. All it took was removing one big center nut. Try that today.
