Overall, though, put an EcoBoost 2.0L in a vehicle and it will get better fuel mileage (10-20%), with more power, than the standard V6 it replaced. That's why they are so popular, and every other OEM is doing the same thing with turbo engines.
When I said problem it’s meant as a philosophical one. But wait until you get a repair bill for a water-pump.

They do it because they are global corporations that want to avoid displacement taxes.
They do not have more power than the V6's. Mine has 304 hp with no premium fuel requirement.

Do all these people finance everything to the hilt? I would think the last thing you would want to own if you had any sort of debt whatsoever would be a luxury car.

Why do you assume that everyone who lives in a middle class neighborhood is middle class? Most people I know buy much less house than they can afford. I paid $620K (middle class in my area) for my house 18 years ago and could have afforded a more expensive house at the time. My income has doubled since then and I can easily afford a much more expensive home. My income puts me on the high end of middle class (I'm a 3%er) and is nearly twice the median income for my zip code, but you'd never guess it from my home. On the other hand, I have over $200K worth of cars (purchased new and paid for), which makes me exactly the kind of person you're describing - based solely on outward appearance. However, I have no debt other than a mortgage and enough savings to have a very comfortable retirement. And guess what - most folks I know are in the same (or better position). We're not "financing everything to the hilt". You may be surprised to know that it's possible to have nice things on a middle class income.

I know how much they cost - it's a non issue. Maybe your friend was getting ripped off...

Because people can buy whatever they want and it’s nobody’s business anyway.

Not just that but CAFE penalties which have nothing to do with displacement.

Many 4-cyl turbos have more power (focus on the torque, in particular) than the V6's they replaced. That is very common. Don't know what you drive so can't comment on that.

American consumers are brainwashed when it comes to the # of cylinders that are needed. With the way engine technology has advanced we are on the way to seeing Turbo-4's and Turbo 6's replace naturally aspirated V6's and V8's. Just watch...in 10 maybe 20 years, aside from maybe some high end sports cars, it'll be hard to find a V8 in a regular vehicle.

Cadillac XTS Platinum, mentioned a number of times in the thread.
Almost all of the NA V6s have over 300 hp nowadays.

That engine is rated at 264 torque @ 5,300 RPM. That's the issue...a 2.0L 4cyl turbo is typically 275-300 torque at 3,000 RPM. Torque is more important than horsepower and when you get peak torque at 3,000 RPMS and you don't have to wind it up to 5,000+, it makes a big difference.

Or better yet, use something like a 2.7L boosted V6 that'll have ~ 325HP / 380 torque at 3,000 RPMs in a car like yours.
