Seriously Ball Freak -- how many times are you going to see "don't bother" or "I'm not wasting my time on you" before you actually stop wasting time?
I decided to view this post. The fact you actually took time to research that shows how much time you're wasting. Why don't you just go away? Let me guess. You're hear to torment me. Wow. You need to seriously get a life. If you get high off irritating me, you must not have a job, lady, and be living in your folks' basement. Even if you aren't, I'm still not worth your perseverations. Get some friends.

Where the hell are these quotes coming from. I'm not sure what you're trying to prove. We all know Baltimore has Southern influences and a Southern past. You seem to like taking it one step further and saying that Baltimore is culturally, linguistically, completely demographically and industrially Southern from a modern standpoint and there is no way in hell you can say that. We know Baltimore isn't Northeastern like New York is. You seem to have this crazed, obsessive compulsive desire to make Baltimore as Southern as Richmond, no wait, as Atlanta. Why don't you find some other hobby because you sound nuts.

As long as Eddieolskool, wolf39us, and BajanYankee are around, 3 individuals joining the pack to make 40% of Marylanders saying the state is Southern >50%, I guess Maryland has to be Southern. No further questions your honor. I move to dismiss. LOL. You three have fun being in the minority.

You realize these conversations go back and forth between a handful of people? It's usually the same few who say one or the other. Most of the forum doesn't give a damn.

Or are from Maryland and already know the answer.

That being said, these conversations can be fun and enlightening.....sometimes.

You do have native Marylanders who claim they are Southern, but they don't yell as loudly as the wannabe New Yorkers.

As a multi-generational native, I find it all pretty amusing. Pretty much anyone whose family has been here for more than two generations knows our state defies easy explanation and easy categorization. Our state isn't called "America in Miniature" for nothing, what else would people expect?

I also find it funny that is "round" of the battle royale consists of people not from Maryland, but all so sure they know what we are, who we are, and how our state should be described.

Sure Maryland isn't easily classified. For a large part Historically it is Southern. From a modern standpoint it is more Northeastern. It historically has mirrored both regions indicated by the fact it sent troops to both sides in the Civil War although more to the Union.

My point has long been that anyone who insists on a single identity for the whole state, be it "North" or 'South" is wrong, even with the small type qualifiers about minority characteristics of the cultural region they reject. We are a Border State, not North enough for the North, not South enough for the South.

Honestly, if someone REALLY wants to understand Maryland, you need to look at county level data. When you break down the demographics, geography, culture, dialect in this way, you have a decent shot at understanding why Maryland is the way it is. Trying to summarize all of the counties into a one size fits all basket will fail.
