Yeah, I live there, and it's a real city which Boston and SF aren't.

Maybe if you're referring to the local government or something, not as a place. If you ask your friend from Morgan Hill if he wants to go to The City and then you take him to the Winchester Mystery House, he will be both confused and severely disappointed.

Yeah, I lived in the Bay Area, and the people in San Jose for the most part when telling people where they live say SF or Bay Area. Never, ever San Jose. I had to go there for work plenty, its not a city persay (except government structure).

I haven't gone through the whole thread, but to answer the o.p.: Boston is always part of the conversation on Big American cities. City limits are indeed deceptive and SF proper is also diminutive vs its urban area. Boston is a superlative city and a massive influence abroad in Science and tech.

Also, when navigating downtown, the density of tall buildings is impressive. The skyline is deceptive in that sense because a lot is bunched up in a couple of square miles. A super city to explore by foot.

NY, Washington and Philly are more relative to U.S. than Boston.

Sorry to be a hater, but this is true. Boston tends to have a strange perception of itself, going back to the laughable "hub of the universe" thing.

NY and Washington, sure.

Philly, not a chance. No one ever thinks about it outside of Philly.

What does Philly contribute that Boston doesn't?
