Apparently there's just over 2100 cops plus civillian payroll adds up to "There are over 3,100 employees listed in the Boston police 2018 earnings spreadsheet."

So like 1% of police payroll is making >300k or like 1.5% of actual officers

Boston's "1%" probably makes more than that to begin with.

The 200k+ number is more interesting. That would be close to 25% of cops making over 200k assuming none of the civillian payroll is making that much. That number seems more impressive to me.

From the herald article:

"In the city of Los Angeles, the average salary of a police officer with a college degree makes $74,000 a year, according to the police department’s recruitment website. In Chicago, patrol officers make a base salary of between $54,000 to $63,000. The median salary for Boston police officers is around $89,000."

that is pretty high median salary for a police department. It is weird though that they compare Boston cops median salary to the base pay of Chicago partol officers and the average salary of LA cops. Those are all three different metrics? Being a cop in Chicago would probably be worse than in Boston too. 90k median is a solid wage but still solidly middle class for Boston these days (they still have a residency requirement for BPD?)

You'll have to pardon my ignorance, but couldn't they actually reduce costs if they hired more police officers? That way there wouldn't be so many cops getting overtime pay.

BPD and MA state police are known for padding their OT hours, sometimes to a criminal extent.

FWIW the MBTA also has its fair share of 80k base salary guys making 300k from self-approved overtime. I believe they were audited over it and fraud allegations dismissed a few years back.

More cops has been shown to to be a positive against some measures, but after a certain point hiring more police officers is more costly in the long run. Human resources is a huge long-term expense and when running a public safety agency in a major city, there will always be a need for OT. The variable is how well it is managed. The competence of police management varies, as do the political pressures placed on those managers. Being a good cop doesn't automatically make one a good manager and some people rise through the ranks not because they have leadership skills but because of other reasons. Spending money and effort recruiting good management is an element. People like to blame cops because they resent them, but Boston isn't much different than other big cities or other large criminal justice agencies on the need for OT which deal with unpredictability and yet must still maintain certain service levels. Lots of people think they are an expert on policing and criminal justice because they watched Chicago PD or because they falsely believe they can compare the management of public safety agencies to that of private business. That's not to say that they can't benefit from some elements of business management theory, but they are still very unique animals.

Then each cop gets benefits and a pension which ends up being more expensive.

BFD MassNative, MrsB... https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/05/...-janeys-hands/

"The Boston Globe filed suit last week against the Boston Police Department for release of the internal affairs files in both the Rose and White cases, along with a 2005 case involving police Sergeant Clifton McHale, in which he was accused of sexually assaulting an intoxicated woman in his police vehicle. McHale is currently under investigation after a video showed him bragging about hitting George Floyd protesters with his police car. "

these your guys? Lol... Not surprisingly a racist who dislikes GF and protesters on his behalf is a predatory misogynist scumbucket. But keep licking the boots. It's just a few bad apples though-right? Keep telling yourself that folks...apply that same energy to the ongoing MSP scandals too. Youll need it.
