The coastal markets in California are still coming down, $600k today can actually buy you a lot.

When people compare real estate between Texas and California they are rarely doing a apples to oranges comparison. Most Texas real estate is comparable to inland California and you'll find similar prices. Where Texas beats inland California is in terms of jobs, you can find better jobs around Austin, Dallas, etc than you can you can around Riverside, Fresno, etc. In the future this is likely to change though, these areas are rapidly changing and investment is likely to remain high for decades.

A lot by coastal California standards, compared to 5 years ago. But not a lot compared to most of the rest of the country. $600k buys you a palace in Texas.

That depends where you're talking about, $600k doesn't buy you a palace in Central Austin. $600k will buy you a large home in most coastal markets, its only the more desirable communities where $600k won't get you far.

No, not in the middle of town, but you don't have to drive 2 hours to find more more affordable housing. That's what I like about smaller cities. You can be in a safe, affordable suburb yet still be close enough to jobs.

Anyhow, as I said before, taxes play a relatively small role in deciding on a location for a start-up. California's tax code is very start-up friendly so waiting to leave California to start a start-up doesn't make much sense. Leaving after you have a profitable established company on the other hand may make sense.
Good point. Bigger factors for corporate location include quality of workforce, infrastructure, market demand for products, supplier availability. If you're in high tech - it still makes sense for someone to start up in Silicon Valley despite its high costs. The people are there, the financing or access to seed capital is there, and the entrepeneurial culture is very pre-evelent. There are allied companies in the area.

On the other hand, for oil and gas industry - you want to be in Houston. For high finance - go to New York City.

He seems very young and very angry, and naive, with hubris, a bad combination.
