That's incorrect. We voted for a $9 billion bond to start the project. The initial cost then was $40 billion.

Well, yeah. However, this is the status quo when it comes to building anything in this country. Contractors submit low bids that are accepted. A year later that contractor states they can't do it for the amount they agreed to do it for. Then there are the people and organizations that file lawsuits because they don't like it or it doesn't suit their political ideology, and there's no shortage of lawyers willing to get involved in these matters. Meanwhile, the rest of the world is building much larger projects much fast and for much less.

Now approaching 99 Billion and a 2033 finish date.

Bet it continuous to go up in cost and takes longer.

My personal guess: $200+ Billion, and it will be finished after Hell freezes over.

Nope, the rest was supposed to come from private investors(remember?)and federal grants but CA taxpayers were told our share was the 9B bond.

Well those private investors never materialized and the GOP leadership in DC is giving us the middle finger, so now the entire cost of this miserable project is being forced on state taxpayers.

It needs to be stopped.

I don't know about the $9B as our share. It was specifically stated the $9B bond was partial funding for the project. The legislation regarding the passing of 1A stated other sources of funding were to be sought out, both public and private, and spent before the bond money was spent.

I can't find anything stating the rest of the funding was to come from private investors, or that any private investment is required.

As far as being force on the taxpayers, more than half voted for it. Miserable? I don't think so. There is a strange mentality about transportation/commerce projects some people have in this country that makes them think anything is a boondoggle. It started with the simple telegraph and proceeded to the building of interstates (why build I-5 when that old dusty 2 lane Hwy 33 is out there?). Rail projects are just another manifestation of that backwards thinking.

I will agree there is a problem with cost overruns. However, I don't see that as a problem with high speed rail, but as a problem with getting anything done in this country within budget and on time. There was a time when 50 miles of freeway could be completed in less than a year. Now it takes at least that long to plan it and they are over budget by the time the plans are completed, and once they are completed whatever is being built is going to be delayed due to lawsuits. Some of which may be from an out of state PAC. This is the issue that needs to be worked on.

The problem with your proposal is the same people who don't like transit projects also don't care about the homeless population.

Whatever that means...everyone is drunk on spending money. And not giving a hand to those in need.
