Same here.

And I'm a Bay Area native who has also lived in Newport Beach, two towns in the Sierras (one of them in Nevada), and have lived in the Houston metro for the last 10 years.

Mr. 5150 has never lived in Texas. His son lives here (unless he has moved), but he has never lived here....and, IIRC, neither has Seain Dublin.

I've been to 48 states, and I've had people all over the country tell me that they've never met anyone from Texas that they didn't like. I've never had anyone tell me that re California.

Seems strange to have the opportunity to do that , and not take it. If you're really retired then there is no reason to say your domicile is California when your time spent here allows you to declare it isn't.
I have no doubt that Tulemutt is truthful about his retirement.

When I read Tulemutt's post, other than questioning his retirement, I had the same thought you did. I even thought about replying 'Well..at least no one can call you an 'anti-tax liability bird '. Then I thought about it, and realized that...philosophy wise...Tulemutt wouldn't care about whatever taxes he had to pay. I then read more of the thread and, sure enough, Tulemutt's reply to you pretty much echoed what I thought his reply would be after giving it some thought. It sounds as though you don't share Tulemutt's view, and I don't either, but it's his money.

I haven't explored the coast of Oregon, but there are definitely some appealing coastal and coastal area towns in Washington.

You'll probably find the WA rainforest coast a photog's paradise, btw: the beaches w/their rock formations, the mossy rainforest, not to mention the dolphins in Puget Sound, etc. If you move there, that is.
I agree. I personally find those parts of Washington beautiful, and hope we get to see some of Derek's pics on CD if he and his wife decide to spend more time there.

I agree with you about San Antonio and Waco. I probably wouldn't want to live in Waco, but the people are very nice. I live in The Woodlands (a northern suburb of Houston), but if someone told me I had to live elsewhere in Texas, both Boerne and The Dominion (both in the San Antonio metro) would be on my list....along with Colleyville (Tarrant County...suburban Fort Worth), and a few surrounding towns.

Austin they were nice but don't think they're thrilled with Californians there... maybe independent can chime in here with his opinion.
Austin is nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Texas is state proud but I didn't find them elitist they just have Texas stars and flags everywhere.
I agree and...

your last eight words indicate that, after visiting, you started to get it .

IMO, one would have to live here to completely get it.

Go to Texas and they just go on and on about the state
Not facts...just your personal experience and opinion.

People in both Texas and California have a lot of outward pride re their states...but in a different way.

IME, People in many different states think many Californians they have encountered are arrogant. Most of the people I've encountered who think Texans are arrogant are people who happen to live in California.

Call me skeptical, but I have a hard time believing you're representative of the average CA resident.
But that's his choice. I wouldn't want to do that in CA, WA, or OR, but I respect that it works for him. He doesn't have to do that (he bought enough gold decades ago that he could pay cash for a house in SF if he wanted to)....he chooses to.

Just saying, I don't think the opinion of someone who vacations in CA part of the year, on a boat, supposedly, is relevant here.

Given the bolded, I don't see how Tulemutt's opinion is any less relevant (and it's probably more relevant) than someone who affords her rent with a housing voucher.
