You're confusing dismissive with defensive. As soon as you trotted out that reference to the scene in that puerile adventure film U-571, my faith in the earnest nature of your curiosity plummeted.

Maybe I should've pointed out the Chenobyl incident instead?

Why do you think I am concerned to begin with? You think I just woke up one day and thought, "Nuclear plants might be dangerous! Let me go on City-Data.com and tick off some guy named Fontucky...get him mad and angry..."

Believe me, I thought no such thing.

That would have been as ridiculous as the reference to the movie. It's no secret that Soviet era plant construction quality and operations were shoddy and slipshod. A catastrophic accident was inevitable. We do things differently in this country.

Anything else?

Three things:

1. Make sure you address this one, because it's my primary concern: Do people who live near nuclear power plants have higher cancer/sickness rates, even if there is no meltdown? You can compare this to living near power lines. Studies?

2. Do you remember how our "superior" American bridges collapsed and killed dozens of people?

3. How about our country's two tallest towers imploding and killing over 3,000 people?

Similar to the risks associated with living near power lines?
There probably is, i work in a power plant Non Nuk and we can measure the electricity in the air when your in the switchyard, i would probably rather live next to a Nuk than have powerlines in or close to my house.

Interesting. Can you explain why?

Don't laugh but that happened to a relative. He lived in Colorado in a beautiful two story log home. He was out on the deck BBQing with his gas grill. He placed the lid down and went inside to get something. He heard a giant hiss like a gas leak then a muffled boom.
Somehow the hose blew off the tank in the back of the grill! The tank ignited and sent a footlong jet of flame ito the log wall. He came out but couldn't get close due to the heat! He didn't have a water hose and the hose bibb was too far away to do any good. He called the Fire Department and by the time they arrived his house was in flames!

He lost over half the house to flame the other half was water and smoke damaged. THe house was totaled by the insurance company. FD said the tank attachment was faulty.

He never rebuilt but moved on.

In the time since I started this thread, Japan experienced a nuclear crisis. Has anyone changed their thoughts on the power plant near SLO?
