I sense when real recovery on a national level starts, Oregon will recover long before California does. OR's suffering now but has IMO a bright future.

If CA jacked up its property taxes to the skies but eliminated its sales tax and reduced its income taxes, the state would be better off in the long run.

BTW I consider myself to be fiscally moderate.
I agree that the corporate income tax rate should be competitive with other states. However, I have a problem with placing the tax burden on one group of people, and that is what my point has been in the last several posts. Everyone should contribute. Not just corporations, or property owners, or people who earn in excess of $250K a year.

Makes me wonder if...

...any fraction of a society which does not pay taxes, which does not contribute to that society, will eventually lose all respect for that society and government, and since they are supported by that society, will eventually become the majority...

if'n ya git my mean'ing?

I quite agree. Besides Prop. 13, one of CA's problems is that it depends far too heavily on income taxes and in a recession, they wane. In fact, according to a new report from the federal Bureau of Economic Analysis, Californians' personal incomes droppeplummeted last year. Obviously, income tax revenues reflect that as well.

Capitol Alert: Californians' personal income dropped by $40 billion in 2009

Now I realize that MO is just a little backwater, redneck state with much of it in the hillbilly haven of the Ozarks but even though there have been downturns here as well, the state is quite balanced in terms of revenues, especially as the rates for property, income and sales taxes are miniscule compared to CA.

I sincerely hope a new administration, coupled with many other new faces under the dome, will have the courage to do what needs to be done and start CA on its way to healing.

In actuality, how do taxes, high or low, which in the US there is not a huge difference between high tax states and low tax states, although living in socialist Alaska has some benefits. But really, how do these tax rates affect your personal life?

I lived in a low tax state until recently, and low or high, my life goes on pretty much as it always had.

The same question applies to the business friendly or not business friendly, for instance, Nevada is a low tax state but ranks about 47th in business friendly.

How does business friendly or not business friendly affect your getting up in the morning and enjoying your day?

How does Dem control of the legislature, or Republican control of the legislature affect your getting up in the morning and enjoying your day?

I can ask the same question of those who claim the illegals and unions have ruined the state, so, lettuce (farm joke) say they have, how does that affect your getting up in the morning and enjoying your day?

Overall affordability, livability and discretionary income. Some of us actually care about crime and how we're governed. Radical, isn't it?

If you are here, I imagine you have your housing taken care of, livability is pretty much ones opinion, but I find this state highly livable, weather is great, lots of things to do. discretionary income, cost of groceries is pretty uniform, I don't see a big difference, in fact my income now is lower than it was when I lived in the low tax state, but we live well, and enjoy life.

Crime? We have never locked the doors to our home, and we have no idea where the keys are, my truck keys are in the ignition 24/7, I see little crime aside from the normal moron burglaries.
and the normal morons shooting each other, but that happens in every state.

How you are governed is a concept, but, again, how does that affect you getting up in the morning and enjoying your day?

Do you live within city limits of one of the top 10 populated cities of California, and not within a gated community?

Considering what you opine, I doubt it.

And I'm sure those hardest hit by the recession who have lost homes jobs, healthcare coverage, small businesses and/or had pay and benefits cut will rejoice at his good fortune!
