To a degree, Botti, you are correct. I don't think we need to grow up--I think all posters here already are--but you do have a point when you infer that "Canada is not perfect."

But neither is any country perfect. Thing is, we hear so much on this forum that we disagree with, or is just plain wrong:

"Canada's climate sucks!" (There must be something positive to the climate, to keep 35 million people in it, and attract immigrants to it.)

"Canada is socialist!" (When the feds nationalize my little privately-operated legal business, you [generic "you," not you personally, Botti] may have a point. Until then, you don't.)

"Canada doesn't allow free speech!" (I'm getting tired of repeating myself on this one. I've explained this one so many times from a legal standpoint, that I'm not going to bother any longer.)

"Canadians are British subjects, in thrall to the Queen of England." (See above. I've explained this one so many times from a constitutional and legal standpoint, that I'm going to stop now.)

Do such statements occur in the UK forum? In the Australian forum? If not, then why do they occur in the Canadian forum? Is it because we're just next door to the US, and for most Americans, their only foreign trip has been to Canada?

Canada isn't perfect, and I am the first to say so. But I also don't like foreign nationals claiming a "fact" about Canada that we Canadians know is not true. If there's any blowback from Canadians on Canadian topics, it is because Canadians fight ignorance about their country; and they will not allow such ignorance to be perpetuated.

Chevy! Well done young fellow!

Reps for a very nicely crafted submission for thought by all who post in here.

I simply don't because it is not an ideal country in my mind (genetically handicapped in my mind, the location, the climate etc.), and I didn't find a city that is really my cup of tea (like Toulouse is).

And I didn't "leave". I took a leave and will come back, probably next year when the damn cancer is gone. Maybe to Vancouver this time who knows

That is why I stated " if I can use that term " and mentioned you being less so.

My thinking when talking about you were posts where you called Vancouver a fishing village

My apologies for saying you left. Canada will do well having you back !

I don't understand why people feel that anyone has to grow up. I can take, and have, and have given myself, criticisms about Canada. However they have to be accurate. The way some go on about Vancouver and Canada on these forums, you would think we are all freezing, waiting for medical care, having no choice but to sit by the US border warming our hands on the glory of the USA.

Excepting only Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, Canada's climate does suck for the most part, and it's those horrible winters that handicap it.

That has very little to do with a favourable climate and more to do with Canada's wealth, relative prosperity, and openness to immigration, but you must already know that.

I'm a Canadian who was born and raised in Canada, and with the exception of a handful of years, I've spent my whole life in Canada. On the whole, Canada's climate does suck.

I'm not a foreign national, and that Canada's climate does, in fact, suck is a fact. You may want to dispute the truth, and you're free to do so, but that does precious little to disturb it.

What's wrong with the Canadian climate in the three seasons other than winter?

The problem is the winter is lasting 6 months (at least in Toronto), from November to April. Very short spring. The autumn is beautiful. But the winter... Also, comparing to the winter in Europe (now I am in Dusseldorf), Canadian winters are very cold.

Autumn was my favorite season when I lived in Toronto and Montreal. Summer was my favorite season when I lived in Calgary as I am not fond of extreme heat. Avid skiiers probably would disagree. Winnipeg was the best overall 3-season compromise with a lot fewer heavy rain spring and fall days and fewer hot-and-humid summer days than Toronto.

I have fewer complaints about winter weather now because of a lifestyle change. I moved to a condo a couple of years ago. I no longer have to clamber over snowbanks to retrieve my mail from the community mailbox, no shovelling to do, and my car is parked in a heated garage.

I felt colder in the dampness of a German winter than I did at the dry -30 in Manitoba. Not to mention the unrelenting greyness of the winter as opposed to the brilliant blue of a sky contrasting with the white blanket of snow. Not to mention the lack of a real summer and German weather forecasters talking about a "heat wave" when the temperatures hit the mid-twenties. Not to mention missing the spectacular prairie thunderstorms.

People in Florida and Arizona complain as well about heat that lasts forever.

Another feather in Canada's cap. This reflects what I said earlier about the world slowly learning more about Canada. The article itself states

" But with much less recognition, Canada has climbed into the top tier of international rankings."

As others have pointed out, many of the arguments made about Canada stem from ignorance of what is really going on.
