I watched today's iPhone 5 unveil (and the new iPod Nano and 5th gen iPod Touch) on Engadget's liveblog. Overall, no real surprises...I would've felt the same even if the recent leaks didn't happen. The iPhone 5 seems like a decent upgrade from 4 and 4S...but at the same time it was a little underwhelming. I do like that new smaller connector and like that it's reversible...although calling it "Lightning" is silly.

It's not out the question though that I might upgrade to the 5, for the LTE alone.

"EarPods"...what a stupid name. A bit curious to see how well they actually work, though. Apple's current earbuds are trash.

It would've been cooler if the iPhone 5 supported wireless charging and had a fresh new UI for the home screen. The current UI is getting a little stale.

I wish Apple would've had some new..."gotta have it" feature that they would've introduced but I guess that wasn't in the cards. At this point in time, no smartphone manufacturer really has some completely unique or original feature that blows the competition away. The Galaxy S3 has a large screen but it's not particularly unique or revolutionary in any way. Likewise, now we know the iPhone is large and faster than the 4S but alas, not something revolutionary like so many were hoping a few months ago.

I think the smartphone market is at a stalemate; where do you go from here? Sure you can make phones larger, faster, and improve battery life but what will the next "Oh my God, that's amazing" feature be? I'm a bit leery of NFC currently, it's still not in a stage where it'll be acceptable in any quantity. I also have concern about the security features built in to prevent identity theft...not sure I'm ready to have my credit card on my phone yet.

So far...I just don't see anything unique or revolutionary on the horizon. One day I'm sure but not anytime in the near future.
Google Now/Google Glass will be the new thing. However, it needs to be either an implant or a contact lens to provide a video game like (terminator) HUD for your day to day life. Phones might not even have screens if this is the case.

There are tons of possibilities through augmented reality, real time updates per location, and peer to peer connectivity through bluetooth, NFC or whatever. Imagine the phone as one big capacitative touch interface and everything you need to know on your "glasses." It could be put into driving mode as a safety measure spotting obstacles or hard to see people and/or showing a mini-map of your destination.

Question...i'm still under contract with TMobile for like 18 months. If i want to get the IPhone 5, will i need to get an unlocked one from Ebay when it starts popping up on that site? I wonder how much the unlocked IPhone 5 will cost?

I am not excited about the Iphone 5 myself. I would have loved to see them really come out of the box with something new. I was hoping for them to come out with a "frameless" phone. Of course going into today, I knew they were not going too, but one can hope.

I guess this just reaffirms, that it is the SIII for me in February.

What do you mean stale? To quote Phil Schiller from the event "....we're able to add a 5th row of icons to the home screen..."

Game changer right there, baby!!!

Does anyone know if the Lightning adapter (to support old accessories) is a potential FAIL? Not only the $29/$39 price but also as noted in Apple's website: * Video and iPod Out not supported.
