Here is another marriage amendment to the NC Constitution.

Protecting the sanctity of Marriage:
AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND ARTICLE FOURTEEN OF THE CONSTITUTION, PROHIBITING INTERMARRIAGE OF THE RACES.

The people of North Carolina in Convention assembled do ordain, That a new section be added to article fourteen of the Constitution, as follows:

Sec.---. All marriages between a white person and a negro, or between a white person and a person of negro descent to the third generation inclusive, are hereby forever prohibited.

Read three times and ratified in open Convention, this 11th day of October, A.D. 1875.
E. RANSOM,
President of Convention

Johnstone Jones, Secretary
W.M. Hardy, Assistant Secretary.

---------------------------------

I'm sure the people of that time who said they were "protecting" marriage had the same motivations of those wishing to prevent the same rights to Gays & Lesbians today.

You may lose a few New Englanders, New Yorkers, or Californians, but honestly, if you look at the number of states that have passed marriage amendments very similar to the one that just passed in your state, you would see that there are a lot more Americans who agree with it than are against it, so why would they want to avoid NC when the vote there proved that your state is more like minded with the state they are coming from and what they are used to, not less?

If liberals really want to avoid states that have passed marriage amendments just to make some sort of point, then they are going to have to avoid a lot of very nice states with a lot of great amenities, which is kind of silly, if you think about it.
Again, the idea is to attract educated and contributing members of society. We hardly need any more unemployed Ohioans and Michiganders.

Well...not to have intercourse with them, that's for sure. But, regardless of sexual orientation, I would think all unmarried folks, old or young, male or femaile, gay or straight, star-bellied sneech or not, would like the additional benefits of tax breaks, right of survivorship as it pertains to pensions, etc., eligibility for health insurance, etc.

Sadly, the above issues seem to be rarely discussed - instead it's always about sex and religion. A pox upon both sides of the argument...

Because of the benefits, definitely nothing to do with sex.
If one has a roommate who is unemployed (or employed with no benefits) and marriage is not in their plans in immediate future, what better way to have one's buddy covered with same benefits a person already enjoy. As long as the friend pays for extra coverage part of the benefits.

This is the reason I don't see companies being "hurt" by not passing this in NC. If anything a company should be even more attracted to move to NC to save money.

Your quote proves that you don't get it!
Nowhere in the bible says to not marry a different race, but it surely says that marriage is between a man and woman.

Do you see the difference???

What about people who don't believe in the bible? Should we be forced to follow it's rules?

The bible is not the constitution. The constitution federal & state has no religion in it.

The bible says nothing about civil unions and domestic partnership.

He posted that link as it as well is A1 goes against the 14th Amendment when the case goes to SCOTUS yes they will say it up to the states but they will also argue on merits of the 14th Amendment of USA.

There was a thread concerning the amendment on the NC board, prior to the vote. I tried to point out that the actual wording did not match the title, but the pro-amendment folks argued about it & said that wasn't true. You can't argue with people who won't read what they are voting for.

After the vote, the pro-amendment folks went into the thread to gloat & name-call. That was shut down & other threads sprang up. War has been going on on the main NC board for some time now.l

There was an editorial in the Shelby Star that summed the amendment up very well. The writer said that this was a deceptively named amendment that was placed on the ballot by a do-nothing legislture that was elected because of promises to help to get jobs, but has slashed the education budget instead. He went on to say that he felt that putting this divisive amendment on the ballot was a way to divide people & to distract people from paying attention to them.

It was said, before the vote, that there were companies waiting to make decisions about coming into the state until the vote was taken. I think that we can safely assume that the decisions were made & the jobs went elsewhere.

No, of course you're not out to insult anyone, are you? How bigoted is it to claim that anyone who disagrees with you is uneducated or unemployed? You show more about yourself with every post. Congratulations for slowly diminishing your credibility and relevance to this discussion.

Well please provide the biblical quote that would prevent NC from recognizing Gay marrriage. If you know it's there, it shouldn't be much of an effort to produce it.

Second request, if someone chooses not to believe your Bible, then why should the state force them to adhere to it?

I do get it BTW, whether the quote exists or not about interracial marriage, the State certainly used religion to justify it. Here is a court decision used to invalidate the marriage of an interracial couple.
"The purity of public morals," the court declared, "the moral and physical development of both races….require that they should be kept distinct and separate… that connections and alliances so unnatural that God and nature seem to forbid them, should be prohibited by positive law, and be subject to no evasion."

This law remained in force in NC until 1967. Many of us here are old enough to remember those times.
