So you're for increasing the minimum wage? Awesome.

I suspect this is correct, although, you'd be surprised at the number of people subject to government reprisals in South America.

If this wasn't all a gigantic vote grab attempt (on both sides) sensible legislation would be passed to redfine what is actually an asylum seeker and how they are handled. We don't want to let in those who are not authentically in danger, and we do want to provide asylum for those who qualify... and put nobody in cages or other inhumane conditions.

The other sensible legislation would penalize employers who knowingly employ those who are not legal to work here. This has never been seriously enforced. Let's go after employers who create the demand in the first place...

I'm curious to know how many applied for asylum in any of the countries they passed through before arriving here, versus waiting until they arrived on American soil before suddenly realizing they required asylum. And what changed in South America in the last two years to suddenly generate this massive wave of asylum seekers?

There's nothing wrong with the law per se about who can seek asylum; anyone can request it, but that doesn't mean you'll receive it. What IS wrong is turning them loose here in the US while their case wends its way through a two-year backlog -- which, interestingly enough, nobody in Washington seems in any hurry to clear out. Apparently, hiring 87,000 new IRS agents to harass productive taxpayers is a much higher priority than hiring more hearing officers to expeditiously process these "asylum" claims.

As for Martha's Vineyard, isn't that an island vacation destination that closes down 9 months out of the year? No wonder they decided to re-locate them to an urban center on the mainland, there's basically no resources for an average middle class American in a place like that. I thought it was nice that they put together a special mass for them and made sure they were well taken care of though.

The bitterness from some of the commenters in this thread is entertaining as always. You can always clock a....certain generation online. Thankfully time marches forward.
This "certain generation" you are referring to, is it the generation that kept a roof over your head, clothes on your back, food in your belly and protected you from harm? Are you talking about the generation that taught you how to read and write so you can spew such hatred of them on social media? I see respect for your elders was something your generation wasn't taught. The older generation knows a heck of a lot more than your generation about life, so my advice to you is to do less talking and more listening. Most have something that isn't talk in school....common sense.

I think the Feds should take thousands of asylum seekers, migrants, or whatever we are calling them and have them help DeSantis with all the Ian damage in Florida.

This will force him to accept the help he desperately needs in the most ironic, delicious way, and give these folks a sense of purpose. For their efforts, they can have housing and food, in Florida, for 2 years while they get their paperwork and documentation together for legal status.

Win, win. I'd like to see old Ron try and turn that down to the detriment of his people.

Use migrants as forced labor to own DeSantis --now THERE'S a well thought-out plan.
