If Dallas and Houston are bigger, how come Philly feels so much bigger.

Calling Houston bigger than Philly is like calling Pheonix bigger than SanFran.

I think Philly feels bigger from it's residential areas, and Houston feels bigger from the freeways. Both cities have infastructures that contrast one another.

Is it bigger over 100 sq. miles? no.
Is it bigger over 200 sq. miles? no.
Is it bigger over 1000 sq. miles? no
Is it bigger over 5000 sq. miles? no
Is it bigger over 10,000 sq. miles? no

So how is it bigger?

Ohh thats right. Because for some reason the census says they get to have twice the land area sphere of influnece.

In that same land area Philly blows them outta the water.

Well, Philadelphia's urbanized area IS larger than either Dallas or Houtston's. It's not like he's making the statistics up.

MSA's are useless because the definitions are not consistent throughout the country.

MSA in the sunbelt means something very different than MSA in the Northeast.

Dallas is larger than Philly on MSA and CSA (not on city, UA, or DMA)
Houston is larger than Philly on city (likely MSA) and not on UA, CSA or DMA

Philly is larger than both on 3 of 5 metrics each - those are facts

All metrics are relevant for certain measure - MSA combines commuter levels of counties, CSA associated commuters levels to lessor extent, city is a municpal boundary, DMA is pyschgraphic and proximity measure of media habits and proximity to a core, UA is measure of how large a urban area is.

All are relevant for certain comparisons. If you want to judge which area is a larger urban area? UA is the best metric. If you want to judge which area is the largest media market DMA is the metric, for commuter associated rates MSA is a measure etc.
