you can do that to downtown Houston too. that ship channel is deep
The beach shore feel of Houston is no where near what it is in Miami or LA - while what you say is possible it isnt the same thing. From the Houston DT to the beach is roughly equivelent to Philly which i dont really consider to be coastal - in close proximity, sort of but not really beach culture so to speak like you would find in LA or Miami and not in Houston
You do realize that you can jet ski right to downtown Miami or on the beaches located inside LA. 40min drive to the beach is pretty far for many in LA and everyone in Miami.
Old thread anyway....
Galveston Island is to Houston as Long Beach is to LA.

Fair point, but to say that Galveston as your top tier beach choice being equivalent to Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice, Hermosa, Manhattan, Redondo beaches, and Long Beach is just crazy.
Houston does not have the beach culture that is prevalent in LA or Miami, nor does it have the beach quality.

I can agree with that, but none of those beaches you listed have the history nor charm Galveston has.
Galveston was right up there with New Orleans for trade & immigration. It was on its way towards becoming the New York of the South till the hurricane of 1900 hit.

Dude you have to get out of the TX mindset. I would say Galveston has far less charm than the Jersey shore let alone some of the these city beach culture towns in LA
and Yes Galveston was oh so close in 1900 (regardless of what the PR pieces say) one was a city of millions and one was a city of tens of thousands (also this pre air conditioner; this area was abysmal in the summer prior to the AC)
This is where the Houston lose all credibility - trying to claim a beach culture with the charm and influence that either LA or Miami has

Man that is funny
Again there are actual beaches in the city limits of Miami and LA.
