ITs a legacy of tribalism and recent arrivals By the time immigrants get south and west they've been acclimated and assimilated more the wealth and prestige of the white community declines (especially out west) and everyone is on more of a level playing ground and has more shared culture. Add to this the much larger community sizes geographically and yea..integration.
By the time you get to CT and MA...there is nearly zero shared culture between whites and let's just say non-whites they may as well be living in two parallel universes/states.
In the areas where there is integration its most commonly- Really old dying off white townie population and then a big influx of much younger foreign-born or 2nd generations people from the Caribbean and Central America.
As you move south into NY and NJ that begins to be less of the rule- more town where blacks established a foothold in the 1960s or 1970s but even those paces are often known as being "the integrated town" of whatever county/region. Plainfield NJ, Willingboro NJ, Hackensack NJ, and Bayside Long Island are good examples
I live in Derby, KS and it is not integrated at all. I feel unwelcome as a biracial man of color. The Midwest is just as bad as the Northeast. The racism here is more subtle though compared to NY, NJ, PA. I found the West Coast to be more accepting and integrated.
I seriously doubt NYC is worse- there is too much shoulder brushing and pluralism embedded into the culture and everyday life. Uness if youre in NYC Public Schools... It seems as though everyone has some legitimate understanding of other racial or ethnic groups, even if just in the immediate neighborhood(s) whereas in like suburban Boston or even the Capital Region of NY you will find more people who clumsily navigate what should be everyday interactions with people of different backgrounds.
I find the tri-state NY area more people with clique and tribalism attitude than West Coast. More “where are you from? Are you one of us?”
West Coast can be very segregated too, especially in the wealthy suburbs/neighborhood, (when parents get together, a mom would half-joke that they are the only Hispanic family on fancy xyz street and even though her husband is a high ranking executive in Warner Brothers some people casually mistaken him as a gardener when he isn’t in suits.) but is generally more lassiez faire.
Yep. I was in Ridgewood NJ, an affluent “semi-diverse” town, the other day. I was walking downtown in front of a Japanese restaurant. A guy, his wife and his dog walked by and proceeded to sit at one of the outdoor tables. One of the workers at the Japenese restaurant came out and with a startle he said “NO DOGS. NO DOGS ALLOWED!” The guy with the dog (older white guy) said “why you gonna eat him chow-mein?” The. Poor guy was left dumbfounded and nobody intervened. He just walked back in and proceeded.
Imagine this in Raleigh? Greensboro? Orlando? Absolutely not. I think we overblow how integrated the Northeast is. Its diverse sure. Not integrated. All of my racist experiences I’ve encountered have been in the Northeast. Upstate NY and NJ, chiefly. Northeast culture is more NIMBY, you have your space/I have my space with bluntness mixed in there.
Requoting as again, this really struck a nerve. As an Asian guy who grew up in the south, has something similar happened to me. Yes, several times, but this was back in the 90s. Times were different.
Again, not forgiving the NJ racist guy, but he was clearly triggered and angry, so not his best moment. But, maybe people from NJ go straight to the area that will hurt you the most? Ugh.
