On top of that, there are only 16 census tracts in New Orleans which top 10,000 people per square mile--with the peak tract having 38,352 people per square mile--most of which are pretty spread out.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were zero zip codes over 10,000 ppsm.

Information was found from the NY Times Census Project.

You know what I ment. You guys are fighting against Boston based on denisty culture vibe etc as if its the most important thing. Cities like Austin charlotte Nashville etc are taking off .So it seems that all that culture vibe history etc doesn't matter amongst most americans. all that goes out the window.Cities don't grow based on those things..I'm going with Boston why because of its economy and higher educational institutions which is 2 reasons Boston is the size it is Now. Urbanologist, where are you getting the info that says New Orleans has 354k? I've been looking for newer estimates but haven't found any.

The numbers are all funny.

They arent correct. The 2000 census had Nola at 484,674 now its roughly 350,000. There's no way those tracts grew like urbanologists numbers show.

Officially - the 2010 Census counted 343,829 people living in the still-recovering city

A month before Katrina, about 455,000 people called New Orleans home, according to census estimates. That figure plummeted to about 210,000 residents the following year and had rebounded to just fewer than 355,000 people by mid-2009, according to the estimates.

New Orleans' official 2010 census population is 343,829, agency reports | NOLA.com

I'm not saying anything. Point is New Orleans holds it own against Boston in somethings people care about. Cities like Austin and Charlotte have been fast growing for more than a decade, not since 2005. Pay attention to New Orleans.

Here's the overall: //www.city-data.com/zipmaps/New...Louisiana.html for 2009 data

Here is for the zipcodes you listed

70116 for 8672 people per square mile

70115 for 7341 people per square mile

70119 for 6432 people per square mile

70113 for 6982 people per square mile

The above are all for the 2009. Looking at it further shows that the numbers for the detailed profile and overall view for 70116 are way different. Something's fishy here--I'm inclined to believe the numbers from the detailed info pages because the ones from the general zipcodes page did seem surprisingly low to me.
I figure something didn't seem right so I added up all the zip codes giving me a total population of around 712 thousand for the city which is wrong. The city data actually has two different link pages one showing an error for the inflated numbers and the other for 2009 estimates only. I also noticed some of the per square mile numbers were improperly calculated. The site should correct this.

Based on the website sources I've cross examined this is what I found so far as most indicate similar numbers which should be more accurate and up to date. I'll just use one zip code as an example.

source > ZIP Code 70115, NEW ORLEANS LA, U.S. ZIP Codes, Database - NEW ORLEANS Louisiana LA Map

Zip code 70115 population:

2000 Census - 40,287

2009 Census - 28,040

2010 Census - 31,695

Current Estimate: 35,721
(based on recent postal data activity reported by zip-codes.com)

New Orleans
Estimated Current Population: 391,728
Census 2010 Population: 343,829

New Orleans is actually growing it seems.

Oops! my bad I forgot to change the 6 to a 5. The example I listed is Zip 70115. You can find updated info on the other zips at zip-codes.com link I listed. His numbers were the 2009 estimate. The inflated numbers I posted earlier were on one of the city-data link pages which are wrong. Who puts in the zipcode data for city-data anyway?

You think 48,000 people moved to New Orleans in 1 year? there is no way that happened, considering it shrank pretty considerably during the 90's.

This isn't the 90's any more. We want current. This is how they came up with the estimate from their website.

Current Population Estimate - Exclusively from Zip-Codes.com
This field gives the estimated household population for this ZIP Code for January, 2012. The estimate is derived from known delivery information, household occupancy rates, household size, and more to come up with an accurate estimation for the current population.

IMPORTANT: This data does not inlcude population counts for persons in nursing homes, correctional facilities, or other institutions. This is an estimation of the household population based on US Postal Service delivery information.
