You're right though... none of those major metropolitan cities would have recovered if it wasn't for San Diego... and you're absolutely right... building a suburban shopping mall in the middle of an urban core is the BEST way to revitalize a city. THANK GOD you are not an urban planner.

HAHAHAHA. Get out of here.
Oh yeah, well San Francisco started its downtown revitalization in 1906.

Haha if you really want to go there 1682.

But no seriously DTSF is ahead of Center City in many ways.

I'm curious why you included Indianapolis in there...it kind of seems out of league with the others.

Yeah, you are right, Indianapolis is in a different league / tier than the others. It just came to mind when I was thinking of the "others."

I've never been, but my brother raves about Pittsburgh. Does anyone have any thoughts?

It ended up being incorrect. I had heard a NYPD officer state it on CNN when being interviewed. It ended up being factually false. 1.6 million people left NYC in the last 10 years, not 4 million.

I really struggle on where Dallas and Houston could fit. Their Downtowns are basically 9-5 business districts and outside of that there is not much more there..
I'd rank Denver higher than Miami as downtown Denver has more nightlife, restaurants, arts/theatre, sports amenities, museums, and overall it's just a lot more vibrant. Also, how does downtown Las Vegas rank higher than Denver, San Antonio, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh? To me it was a couple of blocks of old casinos, a glorified lightshow and the rest is very derelict.
