As far as importance....no. While the city proper populations are pretty close, pretty much every other measurable is slanted Knoxville's way. What puts Knoxville solidly as 3rd is the presence of UT's main campus. There's also ORNL in the metro area.

I can see, however, how Chattanooga could be one's 3rd as far as preference, though.

That pretty much would be my answer as well, Nashvols. As to JMT's observation about the 1,2,3 license designations referring to the size of the counties in TN, that's correct. Back when the plates were done in that manner the metro areas were closer to being just the county those cities were in, though not entirely. When I looked at a 2-xxxxx number I knew it meant the Nashville metro area.

Illinois it would probably be Peoria?

I would see it as this:

1. Chicago (by a lot)
2. Springfield
3. Peoria

1. Cincinnati/Cleveland (interchangeable; and you can tack Akron onto Cleveland and Dayton onto Cincinnati to create larger metroplexes)
3. Columbus
4. Dayton
5. Toledo
6. Akron
7. Canton
8. Youngstown
