Agreed. Northern California has a ton of things going for it, but a decent beach scene definitely isn't one of them.

Me and my friends went to Montara beach last 4th Of July weekend and had a contest who could stay in thE water the longest, nobody lasted more than 2 minutes and we were all natives. Please, Southern CA is barely warm enough for many people to swim in, Northern CA is frigid in comparison and not suitable for swimming for 98% of the population. Even if you can brave the bone chilling water of Stinston, good luck with the Great White sightings... LOL that is the only thing SD has on SF, I'm from L.A. and can't even remember the last time I went in to water out here

Don't know what beach you thought I was talking about, but I wasn't talking about any specific beach. Read my post again.

The hot beach weather can be anywhere for I care, Miami, NYC, Chicago, Texas, San Diego, Honolulu, Virginia Beach, etc., point is that SF does not get that type of hot beach weather.
Well yeah I get what you're saying, but you can always drive down a little from SF to get to a nice beach, however my best experience at a beach was in PR, the weather was super-super hot, it was unbearable but you know what the beach felt damn good, however there's no way in hell I could live out in PR or Miami for that matter eventhough they have better beaches and beautiful women, the weather out there was killing me.

Well you're from LA, so I'm sure there are lot of things you don't get from your dirty perch in that smog infested bubble that is La. I'm sure the traffic to the beach sucks coming from Pasadena right CalifornioSur?

And exactly is a 'traditonal beach scene'?

I dont understand this strange hostility and you sound personally offended that someone might have a different experience from what you apparently have conditioned yourself to believe to be the absolute truth.

Well, Im sorry but I see people in the water all the time and no one turns into a popsicle. Perhaps your being oversensitive about this?

Furthermore, at first we were talking about water temps but now its also about what is and what is not 'real' beach scene---I didnt realize there was a right and wrong answer since everywhere there is coastline qualifies as 'real'---lol.

Once again, strange.

Stinson Beach is a 'real' beach town whether you choose to acknowledge it or not.

If your implying that most people in SoCal dont really go to the beach that often, then in my experience I have to agree. Its mainly those who live very close by who are there with any degree of regularity.

And in that sense, sav858 is correct, SoCal has far more people into that lifestyle than NorCal as their immediate coastal areas are wayyyy more developed-TRUE, but it doesnt mean NorCal doesnt have any people into coastal living---that's a flat out inaccuracy. Each coastal town in the Bay Area has its own little vibe.

But back to LA, when I lived there I rarely went to the beach and walked on the sand or swam or surfed---say once a year at most.

LOL you're not the first to call me that, but too bad I am not him but by the sounds of it he must of been one cool dude if people keep thinking I'm him but no I actually live 7 mins from the dockweiler beach, and I hardly ever go down there and when I do it's usually not to jump in the water, btw how does it feel that SD is basically a suburb of LA?

My ex always liked going down to the beach on the weekends I mainly did it for her and when we did go it was never to jump in the water, now that I am single again I haven't even been back, the beach culture in LA is not nearly as prevalent as in Miami or say our little sister down south SD

For someone as well traveled as yourself and that has lived in multiple places I'm surprised you really don't get that Northern Ca does not have a traditional beach scene, or at the very least can't admit it. You've been to SoCal, Hawaii, and the East Coast and you honestly thing NorCal compares to their beach scenes? Really? I personally just don't see how that is possible. People touching their toes in the water or the few die hards that can actually handle anything more than waste deep doesn't change the fact that the water is way too cold, on top of being too dangerous, for most people to enjoy in Northern CA.

Go ahead and call it "oversensitive" but I and I think most people would agree I'm actually being realistic about it. There is a reason that few people live along the Northern Ca coast and would rather go to Lake Tahoe in the summer than a beach in NorCal. Go ahead and delude yourself into believing that NorCal had a "traditional" beach scene but it clearly doesn't. Maybe people in WA and OR can feel you but even then they can probably admit anywhere north of Santa Barbara isn't exactly ideal for swimming in and laying out on the beach for MOST people during summer. But if you never really experienced or lived the SoCal beach scene then I guess you just don't get it, and that's fine, but for some of us that have their is a noticeable difference.

Yeah well Alaska has a "real" coast too so I guess by your standards it has "real" beach scene. lol. Yeah Stinson is a real beach town, a real cold one compared to SoCal and the the rest of the US. lol.

Strange indeed that you actually think NorCal has a traditional beach scene.....
