Economic and Population wise? Both of these cities used to one of the 10 largest cities in the 1950's and lost over 50% of thier populations. So which city has a better chance of making a comeback?
I love Cleveland, but being as objective as I can be, St. Louis is in much better shape.
I like Cleveland better than I like St Louis (and I like them both a great deal), but I'm going to have to go with the consensus, here.
Sorry, but I just don't think Cleveland's free-fall is over. St Louis feel like it has put the brakes on its skid and is finding better ways to adjust to its diminished status. I think it has the potential to recreate itself as one of the nicest, most successful mid-sized cities in the country within decades.
Then again, it might just be that I'm in St Louis a lot more and am more familiar with it, its quirks and hidden gems, and have seen more of the recent changes affecting it.
How about some facts, anyone? I've seen nothing "objective" yet (i.e. population growth, GDP growth, unemployment rates, vacancy rates, housing starts, capital investments, population trends, net absorption, cost/SF changes, rental prices, income per capita, etc.)!
I haven't either. Maybe people are putting a lot of stock in the St. Louis MSA's +0.29% growth rate versus Cleveland's -0.66% -- I don't know. To a Chicagoan they're both in the same category. Make your case, St. Louis!
Obiviously st.louis. The suburbs of st.louis are still growing and the metro area is staying stagnant for lack of a better word. Cleveland's metro area actually has declined in population in the past 30 years.
