Santa Monica Pier is definitely the more iconic pier, and is probably the most iconic pier on earth.
It's in so many movies, I've lost count. Falling Down, Cellular, Hancock, Ruthless People, and others.
The thing is, it kind of sucks. It's nothing like it is in the movies. It's a bit seedy and not really family-friendly.
It's definitely nothing amazing for an adult, especially with all the other amazing theme parks in the area, but it's definitely family friendly and fun for kids. I take my daughter there all the time and she loves it.

Maybe I go the wrong time or something.
I guarantee that, in the evening, it isn't family friendly. Lots of teenagers flashing gang signs, occasional brawls, and the like. Definitely not a posh West Side crowd, and not a family friendly crowd of any background.

I guess it depends when you go. Whenever we take her, its usually saturday during the day or night or sundays or at times I may take her after work. I've never had an issue and always see kids there. I agree that there was more shadyness back in the 90's when I was groing up, but those elements never really got in my way.
I really don't think Los Angeles has anything to compare with the likes of Millennium Park in Chicago. Partially due to the weather, but the ice skating scene is pretty big there and after Central Park it's probably the next largest and well known rink in the country.
Los Angeles has nothing like the Magnificent Mile. L.A. may have more high end shops overall, but it doesn't offer the feeling or view that the Magnificent Mile does.

I guaratee you it is family friendly. I live close by and I'm there often enough. Posh westside crowd? Oh brother. The Santa Monica Pier is filled with tourist from around the world and locals from around the region well into the night. I took my niece, nephew and other family members there recently well into the night. My niece road some of the kiddy rides. It definately is family friendly. As many times as I've been to the SM Pier I have never witnessed a brawl. From a local's perspective I love going to the SM Pier and it completely is family friendly.

Bro I didn't even know what the mag mile or millennium park was til I heard it on CD, outside of the Midwest I doubt most people have heard of those either, isn't this about which city is more iconic/famous? So with that in mind Rodeo Dr >>> Mag mile Griffith Park >> Millennium park, hell now that I think about it Mag Mile is not even more iconic than Melrose or Robertson either.

I have never heard of Melrose or Robertson either, and Rodeo Dr. only rings a slight bell...
Now come on, there isn't much that can compete with the likes of this:
Nice pics but many would not know where or what these pics are.
