LA has more depth than people care to realize. If you went to Hollywood and found yourself disappointed, then you set yourself up with failure.
Hollywood's Walk of Fame is a filthy dump, yet sadly it attracts the most tourists besides LA's beaches. I think LA is rather difficult to visit as a tourist since LA's best quality is that there are thousands of wonderful little hole in the wall stores and restaurants scattered all over the city. This makes LA awesome for residents and irritating for tourists.
Overrated...Phoenix (though it's finally getting better), Dallas (if we are calling Dallas western)
Underrated....Flagstaff, Albuquerque, San Luis Obispo (agreed w previous post), Santa Monica, Silver City NM
Overrated: San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Denver, Las Vegas
Underrated: Oakland, Sacramento, Long Beach, Tucson, Boise, Albuquerque
This is pretty much spot-on, minus Seattle. I would say Seattle is neither overrated nor underrated. It's just kind of properly "rated". It lives up to a lot of it's hype, as well as suffering from a LOT of stereotyping... so I don't really see how it's overrated.
The rest of these though? Right on the money. Especially Vegas. That would be my #1 city in the "overrated" category.
