Because the thread is about which city is better. Not about which city has the higher ranked symphony orchestra, or the higher ranked universities.

You're the master of going completely off-topic dimond park.

I doubt he has ever been to Montreal. Walking down a street in Montreal compared to LA? Montreal wins by at least 3 zillion.

Still waiting on that proof that LA has the better shopping. Not that San Francisco has more chains than Montreal. Proof that LA has better shopping than Montreal.

LA does have great shopping but so does Montreal. I wouldn't say one is better than the other.
Frommer's guides says this about Montreal.

"You can shop in Montréal until your feet swell and your eyes cross. Whether you view shopping as a focus of your travels or simply as a diversion, you won't be disappointed. Among natives, shopping ranks right up there with dining out as a prime activity. Many Montréalers are of French ancestry, after all, and seem to believe that impeccable taste bubbles through the Gallic gene pool. The city has produced a thriving fashion industry, from couture to ready-to-wear, with a history that reaches back to the earliest trade in furs and leather. More than 1,700 shops populate the underground city alone, and many more than that are at street level and above. It is unlikely that any reasonable consumer need -- or even outlandish fantasy -- cannot be met here."

and this about L.A.

"Whether you're looking for trendsetting fashions or just some tourist schlock mementos, Los Angeles has your shopping needs covered like no other place in the world. Heck, Los Angeles practically invented the shopping mall."

The claim that they " practically " invented the shopping mall is ridiculous. You either did or you didn't..and they didn't.

The claim that they have your shopping needs covered like no other place in the world, can be made about, many, many cities.

Yeah so let's do a recap:

Los Angeles has better weather, a superior natural setting, a far healthier economy, far more robust job growth, far better shopping(dining, hotels, etc), far better cultural institutions(museums, performing arts, etc), has far better universities, far better hospitals, a better quality of life and the amenities that sustain the rich and elite from around the world-AND LA offers better opportunities for upward mobility.

For all the snobbery and sloppy dismissals by uninformed North people and their sad defenders, Los Angeles really does slap down Montreal quite convincingly.

I'm watching this riveting and quite sad news story:
Quote:
The study's authors say that the standard of living in Quebec has been steadily declining since 1981, in part because of a constant increase in public spending and diminishing returns from that spending.
The director of the Productivity and Prosperity Centre at HEC Montreal, Robert Gagné, said the decline in growth is also a problem.

"Since the early '80s we don't have enough growth," said Gagné.

"At the same time we are struggling to fund adequately our existing programs... roads, schools, hospitals... so we don't have money to travel or to repair the roof of the house so we're [doing it anyway] on our credit card."

The analysis also underlines that the standard of living in Quebec is lower than that of most OECD countries, and lower than the Canadian average.
Researchers say Quebec's standard of living is dropping, public spending is in crisis | CTV Montreal News

So they acknowledge that they've been stagnant since the early 1980s and they are struggling to fund their existing programs because their revenue growth is not keeping up with demand.

All this time I was gloating and bragging about LA when in reality, I should be more respectful of the very sad state of Montreal's economy.
