New Orleans is still bigger than Savannah, granted, and it also still has a world-renowned reputation for fine food and lively bars. I don't know if this is still the case, but when I spent a summer selling dictionaries door-to-door there in the late 1970s, I swear it was the only city in the United States where people drank in shifts.

They may not do that in Savannah, but that city is if anything more elegant than New Orleans, and it has its swinging side too (as the book and movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil revealed to the American public). I've been there as well, though it was much longer ago, when I had an uncle who taught art at Savannah State College (now University), and I think that I'd actually choose Savannah over New Orleans.

But I could just as easily argue the opposite.

Lancaster, Pa., or Portland, Maine?
Portland ME. Better city overall and I love it..

Hoboken NJ or Alexandria VA?

Hoboken, it's not so oriented towards rich tourists and is a lot more culturally diverse.

Longview, WA or St. Cloud, MN?

Henderson, NV... prefer the larger Las Vegas metro to the much smaller Evansville metro.

Lawrence, KS or Ann Arbor, MI?

Lawrence. I've lived there before and loved it. Tempe AZ or Hialeah FL?

Tempe. Though I love FL and its beaches, I would never want to live in South Florida. I don't like desert climates, but the Phoenix area is good.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA metro or Jacksonville, FL metro?

Very close call. Jacksonville's metro has improved significantly. I prefer Norfolk based on location and more urban setting.

Madison, WI or Akron, OH?

Madison, WI or Akron, OH?
Akron. A shorter drive to Cleveland for big-city amenities/jobs, Lake Erie, and closer to the mountains, with a national park right in your backyard as well. There seem to be a more interesting choice of cities to visit for a long weekend as well. Its a metro that gives you a lot of bang for your buck.

Johnstown, PA vs. Huntington, WV

Johnstown, only because I have family in that part of PA.

Dayton, OH or Rochester, NY?

Dayton. The winters are more bearable, and I like SW Ohio a lot. Dayton is a fine metro in its own right, but being close to Cincinnati is icing on the cake.

Rock Island or Rockford, Illinois?
