That's like comparing Seattle's Eastside area. Of course the highest-end wedge of suburbia has high incomes. Especially in a high-cost metro.

As for housing prices, that's not a good thing.

But San Jose is by no means the highest end wedge of suburbia in the Bay Area. It has extreme wealth but also significant poverty (like Seattle). It's just that cost of living in SJ and its immediate suburbs is so much higher across the board. But, like Seattle and most other major cities, it has plenty of areas that are pretty scrubby/sketchy. A better comparison to the Eastside would be places like Palo Alto or Walnut Creek.

I will say, though, in terms of high end shopping, Seattle is waaaay ahead of San Jose. But if we're looking at the Bay Area vs Puget Sound overall, the Bay Area wins by a pretty decent margin.

San Jose got that one over Seattle: Valley Fair/Santana Row vs Seattle metro like Bellevue, downtown and UC Washington shopping. Don't forget Stanford shopping mall.

I'd definitely live in Seattle over San Jose and the SV. The Silicon Valley is only so expensive because of housing demand and everyone who works or wants to work in the tech industry. Seattle is more cosmopolitan and has much more to do than the San Jose area.

Are you saying these are bad reasons to be expensive? lol

More to do? Perhaps.

More cosmopolitan? I dont think so.

San Jose is better educated, more diverse, more international, more affluent, attracts far more highly talented people from all over the world, etc.

If we're comparing Seattle and its immediate surroundings to Silicon Valley (and not just the cities of Seattle and San Jose proper), then I still think Seattle wins. Downtown Seattle and Bellevue (Bellevue Square, the Bravern, etc,) alone have most of those stores and/or products available, as well as many others that can't be found in San Jose and its immediate surroundings (including Santana Row). Also, if we're just comparing downtown areas, Seattle wins in a landslide. Of course, if you're looking at the CSA level and including SF than the Bay Area absolutely wins.
