These are both top 10 cities in the world. New York City wins if you want a big city feel, Los Angeles if you want to stay close to nature but still in a big city. Two different animals, both great. Personally I prefer New York with surrounding Hamptoms, Connecticut etc.
There's a lot of beautiful nature if you go out on Long Island or to Connecticut.
But access to these places is just not feasible for the average New Yorker. For the average New Yorker, you are essentially confined to the city. In LA, Angelenos have access to the mountains, the desert, the beaches and all the cultural amenities that LA has to offer.
In NYC you can take the subway to beach. You don't have to leave NYC so the magic force field that confines us only to the city limits doesn't stop us from from going to the beach!

Lived in both LA and NYC. The latter has the higher quality of life. LA does you no good if you aren't interested in having a car, or want a truly urban city and nature isn't the priority.

I've lived in both as well and IMO I believe LA offers the higher quality of life. Like I said, for the average New Yorker, you're going to live in a tiny, cramped up apartment. You're going to be confined to the city and over time, the city loses it's luster. It's great when you're young and you just want to meet people but it gets old real quick.
In LA, the outdoor amenities combined with the urban fabric of the city makes for a unique experience unlike anywhere else in the country.
I lived in both cities as well and New York is simply the greatest city in the world !!
Los Angeles does have the better quality of life and that shouldn't even be debatable due to the diverse landscape of California.
Basically this answer boils down to which lifestyle a person perfers.
